Tomorrow is the BIG Day!!

Tonight, November 3rd, Dave's Spot did not come in. I did get a brief chance to talk to him this afternoon. He was tired, but getting closer and closer to Castle Craigs State Park.

Dave told me he would head for PCT mile 1490. He'd then have 15 miles tomorrow to walk to the end of the line. See PCT Half Mile map California Section O page 8.

http://www.pctmap.net/download/p/mapdl.html

He will have a climb of about 2000 feet up, and then it's all down hill. Dave will cross under the 5 freeway and then he'll need to make his way to the campground. He wants to go back to the same location I dropped him off. It is really important to him that he hikes every step of this Adventure. He'll then see if he can get a hitch into Dunsmuir, a town about 5.5 miles away. He really doesn't want to walk that. He'll call and let me know if he's at the campground waiting for me in his tent staying warm and cozy, or if he gets a ride into town and is waiting for me in a motel all warm and cozy. Either way, I'll be with him tomorrow night.

There will be no blog update tomorrow night because it will be late when I get in. It may actually be a few days before I have Internet access, so be patient and we'll get you pictures and a will be setting up a welcome home for Dave. Don't forget we are planning a 7 mile hike from Baden Powell to Little Jimmy and then have a get together here at the house. Details next week.

Butterknife Creek

Dave called in early this afternoon. Yesterday was a miserable day to hike. It was suppose to only be am showers, but it sprinkled in the morning and rained on and off all afternoon. Everything was soaking wet. He also spent time getting on and off the trail onto the road which was driving him crazy.

He found water last night and decided that would be where he could camp, but was unsure about where he could put up his tent. he took about 10 more steps when he walked into the most perfect camping spot. During the night he heard noise and thought it was a bear. Luckily for him it was a deer checking out his tent.

Things were dry this morning, except for his feet. The wind was drying things fast. His shoes and socks were still wet from walking through the overgrown trail yesterday. But today was turning out to be a beautiful, crisp day. He turned the corner of a mountain and saw Castle Craigs State Park! How exciting to see his ending location. He could also see Mt. Shasta which was very majestic, covered with snow. Dave was given yet another wonderful hiking day. He did have 4-5 inches of snow to walk through at one point, but the snow was so soft that his sore feet and didn't mind the snow at all.

His shoes, well, that is another matter. They are falling apart. There is no tread on them. The top of the shoe has ripped and torn so that it is almost half way off. He only needs to squeak 2 or so days out of them! Yes, he does have duct tape, but I'm not sure how much of that is left!

Dave's goal for today was to get to PCT mile 1472, but he thought that he might stop short if he came upon water and a good camping spot. He must not have had much luck, because his Spot came in at 5:01 at PCT mile 1472. Check out PCT Half Mile map California Section O page 6.

Currently, it looks like Dave will get into Castle Craigs State park Thursday. He'll set up his tent to stay warm and wait for me to get him. He's planning on being at the campsite where I dropped him off oh so long ago! I've got a long drive, but am excited to see him and bring him home!

Spring - Moosehead Spring Headwaters

Dave's Spot came in tonight 4:39 pm tonight Monday November 1st. He is camping at a Spring, the headwaters of Moosehead Spring, at PCT mile 1453. Camping near water is his highest concern. He is just below Mushroom Rock.

Look at PCT Half Mile map California Section O page 4

http://www.pctmap.net/download/p/mapdl.html

Here is Dave's Spot which you can compare to the Half Mile maps. You can switch from Map to Terrain to get a good idea of where Dave is camping today.

Dave is directly due east of his target, Castle Craigs State Park. Tomorrow Dave will hike over 600 feet in elevation up, and then will start a decent. He'll be going down in elevation about 3000 feet over the next two days.

Update on October 31st

Dave was able to get a weak signal today, Monday November 1st. He was surprised that his Spot did not work, but it was raining last night and I think that interfers with the signal.

I had thought Dave would get to PCT mile 1439, but he stopped at 1437, just after a road by Peavine Creek. You would look at the same PCT Half Mile map, Section O page 2. It rained last night and again all morning.

When Dave called around 1:00, he said it had finally stopped raining. It was cold this morning, but has since warmed up. He's just cold from being wet. The trail is overgrown and of course not just damp, but soaking wet. Walking on the trail was drenching his feet and legs. Luckily there is a road that runs parrell to the trail, that is Summit Lake Road. He'll stay on that road as long as the trail doesn't wander more than 20 yards or so. If he walked just the road it would double his hike.

Tonight Dave is working on getting to PCT mile 1453. He is predicting to get into Castle Craigs State Park at PCT mile 1506.5 on Thursday. It will be just over 50 miles left to go after today.

Yesterday, at one point on the trail, Dave saw smoke. He rounded a curve in the trail and saw flames. He tried to call Shirley, the Ranger he recently met, but when he got no answer he called the Dietmans and Wolman answered. Wolfman said he'd call it in. As Dave walked, he realized that there were a handful of small fires. It looked like someone was burning wood throughout the woods, but no one was watching these fires as far as Dave could see. He kept walking to get out of the burining area. He did hear trucks today but believed these were logging trucks. We'll know more once we talk to Wolfman later in the week.

Trinity Forests - Summit Lake Road

Dave's Spot did not come in tonight, Sunday October 31st. He was able to to call me around noon today. It was raining on and off, mostly off, but Dave was walking towards dark clouds. According to the weather report, he was only suppose to have am showers. He should have had a dry afternoon and evening.

His plan today was to only hike about 13 miles. Yes, the pack on his back was extra heavy with food. He's been slack packing the past couple of days and was already not used to the weight. These would all be good reasons to only hike the 13 miles, but Dave had another reason. There are water issues in this area, or should I say lack of water. Dave will be camping close to the water sources, even if it means a short day of hiking. He'd rather be safe than sorry.

You can see where Dave planned on camping tonight on PCT Half Mile map California Section O page 2, at PCT mile 1439.

Goodbye to Old Station, Hello PCT final section

Dave spent Saturday October 30th with Wolfman and Dennis Heitman. He was glad to have a day of rest for his feet, but he is really itching to get this hike complete.

Today, Sunday October 31st, Dave is on the trail again. He's said goodbye to the Heitmans, Wolfman, and Old Station.

Dave tried to give me a call from the trail this morning, but all I got out of him was that today, go figure, it's raining. Yesterday was suppose to be the storm cell's biggest day, but they hardly had anything in the way of rain. Great news is that Dave will only have am showers and then the rain has lifted for the rest of the week!! He should have temps in the high 60's and low 70's. He should have a fantastic last four days of this hike.

It was thought that this last storm was going to bring in a lot of snow. If so, Dave would then have to decide if he wanted to hike through the snow alone or if he would hike on a nearby road. yes, safety first. Since the storm didn't hit the way it was suppose to, Dave should be hiking the trail as hoped.

Through this section, Dave has Ranger Shirley and her husband looking out for him. She is hoping to be on the trail when he walks into Castle Craigs State Park, Dave's ending point, to congratulate him on this great Adventure. My guess today is that Dave will be on the finish line Wednesday around noon.

Look at the last part of Dave's Adventure on PCT Half Mile maps California Section O. He'll be walking the rest of page 1, all of page 2, and the majority of page 3, camping very close to the top of page 3.

Burney Falls State Park

Dave was dropped off near Burney Falls State Park today, Friday October 29th, by Wolfman around PCT mile 1426. He stopped off at the Ranger Station to meet Shirley and pick up his resupply package. Shirley had not been told that Dave was still coming, so yesterday she sent his resupply package home. The good news is that since Dave has been staying with the Heitman's, he has not had to use his Old Station resupply package. Wolfman had picked his package up for him one of the days Dave was out hiking. You can see the PCT Half Mile map California Section O page 1.

http://www.pctmap.net/download/p/mapdl.html

Today there was not much rain at all. Dave was ecstatic! He is eager to get this hike done. The waterfalls were spectacular. There are several websites where you can look at this area. Here is one of them.

http://www.burney-falls.com/

Tomorrow is suppose to rain, so Dave is going to hang out at the Heitman's and help chop up a tree that Dennis Heitman and Wolfman took down today.

We will be watching the weather, but Dave is hoping to get on the trail Sunday, even with a little rain. He has under 80 miles to go until this Adventure is complete. That is only 4 days. He has to hike the entire PCT Half Mile map California Section O. That is all that remains. My work may not let me leave to get him until Friday, but he'll find a place to stay and wait for me.

Hwy 299 near Burney

Although it was suppose to rain today, Dave decided to take a chance and get a few more miles of his adventure completed. He knew that even though he'd get wet, he'd be back in the evening at the Heitmans. He hiked to PCT mile 1415.5. See PCT Half Mile map California Section N page 19.

http://www.pctmap.net/download/p/mapdl.html

To Dave's relief it only sprinkled a bit at one point. It was also much warmer than it had been the day before. There were occasional clouds, but mostly sunshine. Dave walked along side Baum Lake. He walked through Lava flow areas. At one point he came over a ridge and saw what reminded him of the Serengeti. All in all it was a good day.

Tomorrow is also predicted to be a day filled with rain. Dave is going to be prepared to hike, which would mean saying goodbye to the Heitmans, but would mean he would be one day closer to completing his hike. He will also be prepared to wait out the storm another day or two. He'll call me in the morning, we'll look at the weather report, and he'll decide how to spend his day. I'm hoping to see Dave within one week. Yes, the adventure should be complete, every step walked, in one week!

Rd 22 south back to Old Station

This morning, Wednesday October 27th, Dave was dropped off at Rd 20, PCT mile 1397, by Wolfman. He hiked 20 miles from 1397.5 to 1377.5, back to the Heitmans. You can look at PCT Half Mile map California Section N page 16

http://www.pctmap.net/download/p/mapdl.html

He walked on Hat Creek Rim where he had a wonderful view of both Mt. Lassen and Mt. Shasta. Both mountains are now covered solid white with snow. The trail was crunchy frozen in the am, but then was muddy in the afternoon. Dave was thankful there was no snow. He was able to stop for lunch and he still made it to the Heitman's by 4:45. His favorite part of the day was that he was able to slack pack. Not having as much weight on his back made the day more enjoyable.

At the Heitman's Dave is staying in the tree house. Yes, the tree house! The stair up to the room is made of wild twisty branches, like manzanita branches. Dave described them as very artistic. The roof is shingled. The shingles are off setting, which gives them a charm. Dave described the tree house as very fairytale ish.

Tomorrow it is suppose to rain where Dave should be hiking. He has three choices. First choice is to slack pack again tomorrow in the rain, but get 17 additional miles in. Second choice is to wait until Saturday when it will be a tad bit warmer and less rain and get those 17 miles out of the way. The third choice is to wait until Monday when there is no rain and hike, but still have those 17 miles. "One day at a time" is the motto of the PCT.

Old Station - Hiker Hideway, The Heitman's

Dave called from the Heitman's, the Trail Angels in Old Station. He is PCT mile 1377.7. You can see the PCT Half Mile map California Section N page 13.

Yesterday he had a fabulous walk past some thermals, or geysers. He got to Drakesbad Guest Ranch around 5:30 pm. He found Darrell there. Darrell is closing up the Guest Ranch for the owner. He has been lent from another camp for the past several to close up after the manager leaves. Darrell and Dave searched for the package, but figured that since the manager was leaving they may as well send the package back home. As I had thought, Dave really didn't need the extra food. He is also over-prepared, and had a whole extra set of maps with him just in case.

The storm had knocked out the phone lines and he had no cell service, so he couldn't call home and let me know he was warm and safe. Darrell was glad to have company. He was tired last night and forgot to Spot, but remembered this morning. I always appreciate getting that Spot! His feet really hurt last night.

Todays walk was so flat and cushy, so although his feet are tired, they are not sore. He didn't get on the trail this morning until 9:00 (his Spot had come in around 7:30), but the 24 miles went pretty fast. He got to the Heitman's around 5:45. They lent him their phone so that he could call and let me know he was safe. Wolfman was also at the Heitman's this evening. I'm not sure if he's staying there or had dropped off Dave, but he said that he'll help Dave with tomorrow's hiking plan.

Tomorrow will be sunny and Dave wants to take advantage of the weather. Thursday through Sunday will be rainy and snowy. The plan is for Dave to get back to the trail tomorrow morning and hike about 20 miles or so to a road that is predetermined. Wolfman will pick him up from there and take him back to the Heitman's. If they are willing to have him, Dave will spend the next 4 days with them until the weather improves. He'll be able to get to the post office to pick up his resupply package and be prepared for this next and hopefully last stretch of the trail! Yes, the end is almost here!!!

Since Dave doesn't have cell service, I'll call him each night at the Hietman's to see how he is doing and continue to watch the weather for him. Plans keep changing, so I'll keep you all up to date. It sure is nice to know that he's had a bed to sleep in almost every night this past week! I forgot to mention, when Dave was at the hotel waiting out the weather, he was able to repair another hole in the sleeping pad. There is nothing worse than carrying around the weight (although very light) of a sleeping pad that has a hole in it!

Package from Drakesbad

This afternoon, Tuesday October 26th, the mail arrived in Duarte, and with the normal magazines, fliers, and bills was a package from Drakesbad Guest Ranch. Yes, after calling them two weeks ago and asking them to hold on to Dave's package, they mailed it back! It had to be sent ground, so they must have mailed it at least a week ago. When I called yesterday, the owner told me that his Manager was still there and had Dave's package. He sounded like they were expecting him.

Luckily, it only had one day's worth of food. I've over packed on each resupply box, so Dave most likely has at least one day's work of extra food, if not two. Tonight he should make it into Old Station, where he'll get yet another resupply box. The only thing he won't have is maps for the next couple of dozen miles. If he does meet up with the Trail Angels, they may be able to help him get what maps he's missing. If not, he does have his GPS. I know he just likes to have as many safety catches. Dave is a planner and is always prepared.

Drakesbad Guest Ranch

Dave's Spot came in this morning. He must have gotten in late last night and didn't want to sit in the cold to set off his Spot. He was probably cold, hungry, and ready for sleep. He was staying ath the Drakesbad Guest Ranch at PCT mile 1353.3.

Last night in Chester, CA

Dave is spending his last night in Chester. The rain has kept him inside and that is driving him to get out. Thank goodness for baseball, football and the telephone!

He's staying at the Best Western an found someone there to get him back to the trail head, 7.5 miles away on Hwy. 36 tomorrow at 7:00 am. Yes, it will still be raining, but should be sunny around 10:00 am. He wants to hike to Drakesbad Guest Ranch 21 miles away. He'll stay there overnight and then have a 24 mile hike to Old Station.

The Trail Angels, Georgi and Dennis Heitman heard that Dave was coming their way and were concerned that they had not yet seen him. They have the "Hiker Hideaway" at PCT mile 1377.7 Schroomer is getting word to them that Dave is working on getting there Tuesday night. It is wonderful to know that there are so many Angels out there watching out for Dave.

There is another storm coming, so Dave's schedule after Tuesday is a bit up in the air. It does look like it will be November before he is home again. It's getting colder, so the sooner we get him home the better.

Thanks to everyone for all your well wishes and assistance you've give.

Another day in Chester

Dave talked to his daughter Amanda and his parents today. It's been a great time for him to catch up with family.

He hesitated going outside today because it was constantly raining. Watching the local news, there are may car accidents in the mountains around Chester. He finally braved the weather, did his laundry, did some shopping, went bowling, and got some dinner.

Dave actually ran to the bowling alley (because of the water). He really misses running. He bowled three games. He had to do something because sitting in his room was driving him crazy. He picked up a crossword puzzle book, needing some additional entertainment.

We are watching the weather around Chester and Old Station, California. Dave is hoping to get on the trail Monday, even though it may still be raining. He needs it to stop in time to set up camp and he'd be happy. With another storm coming, he may have to stop in another town to wait out the weather. We'll have another update on the weather tomorrow.

Chester, California

Dave called in early this morning, around 7:45, to tell me it was raining. The bad weather came in a day earlier than planned. His feet were already soaked. In an effort to get warm and dry, he decided to hike to the nearest road, Hwy 33, and hitch a ride 7.5 miles into the town of Chester.

Dave called again at 1:00. He had gotten to Hwy 33, but was having trouble getting a hitch. He was not looking forward to hiking or being in the rain any more than he had to. While we were talking, I could hear the cars whizzing past him. Most, he said, were going the opposite way. Just as we were about to hang up so he could head out on foot, a car with two young guys stopped for him.

He called me a few minutes later, already checked into a motel, happy, very happy to be out of the rain. The two boys who picked him up both want to hike the PCT and peppered Dave with questions about his adventure. Dave was more than happy to answer their questions.

We are watching the weather of Chester, California. It looks like he may be there until Tuesday. His main goal these next few days will be to use his charm to find someone to give him a ride back to the trail so he won't waste any additional time.

On Tuesday, he will start at PCT mile 1334 and will need to get to PCT mile 1353.3, to Drakesbad Guest Ranch. He'll stay there one night and get back on the trail Wednesday. He then will have two days to get 45.9 miles. His hurry is that the rain is coming again and he may find himself waiting out that rain storm in Old Station, which is PCT mile 1377.7.

Even if Dave doesn't hike these next few days, I'll update the Blog on his weather and plans. Dave has TV and is looking forward to some baseball or football games.

Dave called in this morning around 8:30 after he hiked to the top of a 7000 foot mountain. He sounded great.

He did tell me that when he was at the Middle Fork of the Feather River (see blog with that title), it was raining. He decided to set up camp early that day and wait out the rain. He's really tired of rain after Washington.

Last night he got to Bucks Pass where he planned to camp, but there was no good spot to put his tent. It took a while to finally find a good spot to lay his head.

Although Dave has not seen any more bears, there is plenty of bear scat around. He saw two hikers yesterday who had just had a bear run in. These hikers reminded Dave of some trail angels in the area who he could call on in the next few days. He's coming to a stretch of trail that is low on water. Dave's been worried about having to carry extra water. The weight of extra water makes his day harder, but he wants to make sure he'll have enough to drink and eat.

Dave met half, exactly half, of the residents of Belden. There are 6 residents and he met 3 of them. Belden was a gold town, then a railroad town, then a water and power town, and now it's a music town. There is a Music Festival held there. Not a large festival, but music none the less.

Dave was able to stay in a cabin and was also able to do his laundry. When he went to the Post Office, it looked a lot like the cabin Dave was staying in, a little house. Inside, the Postal Employee was playing a flute. The Post Office is also a museum. He enjoyed looking at all the historical objects. He was even excited to see that some of their pieces he also owns. Dave loves stuff, especially old historical stuff!

Dave was getting cold standing on the top of the mountain, so we kept the call brief. He told me that the ground was white, frozen. He is now heading for the Drakesbad Guest Ranch at PCT mile 1353.3. He should get there by Saturday, just in time for more rain. In that area, Sunday and Monday are going to have constant rain. If the Guest Ranch will let him, he will stay there until Tuesday.

Today Dave's hike was fairly flat and then ended downhill. He will most likely have some showers tonight. Dave is coming from Sierra City, which has showers tonight and tomorrow. He is hiking to Belden, which only shows showers tonight and sunny tomorrow. Sierra City is 60 miles behind him, and Belden is only about 30 miles away, so hopefully he'll get the sunnier weather.

One of Dave's resupply packages are already in Belden. Another one will get there tomorrow. Dave is not scheduled to get into Belden until Tuesday mid morning. He's making good miles each day which I'm sure Dave is happy about.

When Dave was home he repaired the two microscopic holes in his air mattress. This has made his nights so very comfortable. These nights of good sleep will surely be helping his hiking.

Dave's Spot did not come in yet tonight, Saturday October 16th. His goal was to hike 15 to 20 miles. That would put him around PCT mile 1232.

Last night Dave's Spot did come in. He camped at PCT mile 1212. Check out his Spot.

http://www.findmespot.com/mylocation/?id=3gWP2/39.6605/\-120.67609

You can also check out PCT Half Mile map California Section M page 2 for Friday night camping. Tonight's camping is on page 5, PCT mile 1232.

We should hear more from him tomorrow. Rain is expected in the area that he is hiking. That would make Dave's Spot difficult to get. The cloudy weather could also explain why we have not gotten the Spot tonight. Rain should clear up Monday or Tuesday.

Gold Lake PCT mile 1212

Dave was surprised today, Friday October 15th, to get a cell signal. He only talked briefly because he has no way to keep his phone charged. He was at PCT mile 1212 overlooking Gold Lake. Check out PCT Half Mile map California Section M page 2.

http://www.pctmap.net/download/p/mapdl.html

When leaving Sierra City, Dave had quite a climb uphill. He went from approximately 4500 feet to 7500 feet. When looking at the PCT Half Mile map, check out page 12 for elevation information. He had to tackle switchbacks. As he was on the 10th switchback, a big blondish gray bear turned onto the trail ahead of him. The bear was about 50 feet away and was not running, but was trotting, moving faster than Dave was comfortable with. Dave took off down the mountain (not on the trail), passing two of the switchbacks. He made lots of noise and that did the trick. After a bit he headed back up the switchbacks and didn't see the bear again. There is a lot of bear scat, but hopefully no more bears. He will be careful tonight to have his food far away from his tent. Safety first!

This afternoon he is going to hike a bit further to see if there is water about three miles ahead. If not, he'll have to head back to Gold Lake which is further off the trail. Water is important, so he's not concerned with having to do a bit of extra walking. His feet are sore because this part of the trail is very rocky. He may need some new shoes before this trip is over. I sent him another package today with headphones (he's carrying an ipod without headphones!), goo, and Powerbars. They will arrive in Belden by Monday afternoon. Energy and music, two of Dave's must haves for the trail!

I should get Dave's Spot later but may not be able to post it until late. Keep watching!

Sierra City - Buckhorn

Dave is staying at the Buckhorn bar and restaurant tonight, Thursday October 14th, in Sierra City. He is at PCT mile 1197.6 His hike into town today was downhill and rocky, but he was very glad to get that pack off his back once again. Check out the PCT Half Mile map California Section L page 5.

http://www.pctmap.net/download/p/mapdl.html

The Buckhorn has lodging above the establishment. They've rented it to Dave for the night. He has access to the second and third floor, which has a balcony, free laundry, kitchen, and T.V. One of the first things he did was buy a paper to catch up on what was happening in the world.

Dave saw deer yesterday and mountain bikers. The deer were not afraid of him. There were 5 mountain bikers on the trail (yes, they are not suppose to be on the PCT). He camped on a road which ended up being so very comfortable. He had been hiking for two miles looking for a flat spot to camp. When he ran across the road, he decided to stop, not knowing what else he would find. When he began hiking this morning, he walked into a canyon. At first glance it would have been perfect for camping, but it was very cold. The road location had been really warm. Just pure luck that he picked the right spot.

This afternoon, Dave will do laundry, grab a beer, and relax with some T.V. He describes Sierra City as the "wild, wild, west". The feel of the town is very quaint.

Dave hiked 22 miles today. Sierra City is at PCT mile 1197.5, which is Dave's next resupply location. He'd need to hike a good 33 mile day tomorrow, but since the Post Office would be closed by the time he got into town, he'll probably take it easy and do another 20+ mile day and have a short walk into town Friday.

Today I picked up a Through Hiker, Schroomer. He finished the very last steps of his hike today! It was wonderful to be able to celebrate this with him. Vasquez Rocks in Agua Dulce were some of his last steps. He completed the trail at the corner of Agua Dulce Road and Darling Road. He waited for me at the Saufley's, Hiker Haven. It was great meeting Donna and Jeff. We are hoping that they join us for Dave's end of the hike party. Congrats Schroomer!!!

Peter Grubb Hut

Dave has had a wonderful day today, Tuesday October 12th, both on and off the trail.

Last night at the Lodge, Dave met the other guest, Jim McPherson. They had a nice evening together which included a glass of wine. This morning Jim and Dave had breakfast in Truckee. Jim then took Dave to the Post Office to get his resupply package and back to the Lodge to get packed up. Dave had forgotten his new lighter in my car, so Jim took him back into Soda Springs to get a new lighter, and then back out on the trail.

Jim has been working at the Peter Grubb Hut getting it ready for the many guests it plans to host this winter season. Dave hiked approximately 8 miles to the hut and decided it was so nice he needed to spend the night. He is just loving the area's beauty. Dave is at PCT mile 1162.5. Check out PCT Half Mile map California Section L page 1.

Dave has not yet hit his Spot, but really doesn't need to since we know exactly where he is camping. He is feeling a bit guilty for only hiking 8 miles today, but I reminded him to have fun, relax and enjoy, or this adventure is not worth it.

A huge thanks to Jim for taking care of Dave both last night and today. We really appreciate your trail magic! It meant so very much to Dave!

Soda Springs, Donner Pass Road

Dave is safe in Soda Springs, Calfornia today, Monday October 11th, at PCT mile 1155.5. He got off the trail and almost immediately got a hitch into Soda Springs and was dropped off at the Post Office. What we forgot was that today is Colombus Day and the Post Office is closed. Check PCT Half Mile map California Section K page 9.

http://www.pctmap.net/download/p/mapdl.html

There was a choice of hiking into Truckee which is a 12 mile hike, camping somewhere, or asking if there was any other option.

Dave went into the little store in Soda Springs where he got a phone number of a place to stay. When he placed the call he found out that it was a rent by the month location. The lady he talked to there told him of a Sierra Club location near him. He gave the Sierra Club Lodge, called Clari Tappaan Lodge, and they gave him a room for $25. The place is set up as a Dorm, full of bunkbeds. He is the only one staying in one wing. There is another wing where a Sierra Club member is staying. The staff was leaving, but offered Dave free range of the kitchen, including a large walk in freezer filled with food. His first comment was that it is spooky. Check ouot the web site for this lodge.

http://www.sierraclub.org/outings/lodges/ctl/

On the last part of the trail this morning, before he made his way into town, Dave had another experience with a knife edge mountain ridge and gusting wind. He was up almost 9000 feet and had winds around 50 mph. Clouds were blowing in, but the weather was still perfect for hiking.

This area gets the most snowfall of all the Sierra's, and is well known for skiing. Dave mentioned that there was a ski resort, Sugar Bowl, near where he got off the trail. There is a highschool which is just for kids who want to be skiiers.

Dave will spend the afternoon reading a book from the Lodge's library. He is looking forward to a quiet evening.

Squaw Valley - Northern Lake Tahoe

Dave's Spot came in tonight, 10/10/10, at 5:48 pm. He is camping at PCT mile 1145.5. See PCT Half Mile map California section K page 7.

http://www.pctmap.net/download/p/mapdl.html

See Dave's Spot Location on Google Maps:

http://www.findmespot.com/mylocation/?id=3eciw/39.22573/\-120.27605

The body of water to the right of his camping area is Lake Tahoe.

Tomorrow he has just over 10 miles to get into Soda Springs where he'll get his first resupply package. The weather may have some precipitation, so that will tell whether or not Dave gets right back on the trail. Getting into soda Springs will be his longest hitch - only 3.5 miles. All his other resupply locations are on or very near the trail.

Dave was able to call in tonight. He's looking forward to getting into town. Not too many people were on the trail today. He sounded really good. His main issue is that he's not making the miles he wanted to. Today he was just shy of 20 miles. Water, or lack there of, is his reason for not going further today. He found a water source and knows there most likely won't be one until town tomorrow. It is safer for him to camp near water and leave tomorrow with more than enough water to get into town. It is also getting dark earlier, especially in the mountains. Dave likes to be in camp, eat his dinner, and relax a bit before the sun is gone.

Today, Carrie, Nadir, Dave O, Joanne and I were all on the Pacific Crest Trail at Vasquez Rocks. It was nice having even the tiniest of connections with Dave. He has only days left on the trail, and it will be so very nice having him home for good. What a great feeling to say he only has "days" not "months" on the trail! This adventure has almost come to an end!

Desolation Wilderness

Dave's Spot came in tonight, Saturday October 8th, at 6:13 pm. He had no cell phone bars but was able to make a short call to me after his dinner, around 8:00 pm. He is camping at PCT mile 1128. He was just shy of 20 miles today because he ran into some hikers and spent time talking about his adventure. See PCT Half Mile map California Section K page 5.

http://www.pctmap.net/download/p/mapdl.html

You can also check out his Spot on Google Maps.

The PCT and the TRT (Tahoe Rim Trail) currently follow the same path. Dave started yesterday below Lake Tahoe and is currently half way up the lake. He sounded good tonight, but is sore, especially his feet. The feet are just very tired and worn out, go figure. The Desolation Wilderness area is beautiful.

Yesterday he had to climb over a pass which was covered in freshly fallen snow. Although his feet were wet from being ankle deep in snow, he had a very warm night sleep. When he was in town, he bought a silk sleeping bag liner which is designed to give his sleeping bag another 10 degrees warmth, and it's doing it's job!

This morning was the chilliest morning he should have on the trail. Water was iced over. The weather will be warming up, so the worst is over.

Echo Lake to Dick's Lake - the Journey continues

When we last heard from our Hero, he had crossed into Canada and took his picture at the finish line! He came home and rested almost a full two weeks. He has a small section of the Pacific Crest Trail that he needs to finish to be an authentic "through" hiker, beginning at Echo Lake (near Lake Tahoe) at PCT mile 1094.5. He has until April 17th, 2011 to finish this portion, however if he didn't go now he'd have to travel through winter conditions. He chose to get on the trail this week.

His first plan was to get on the trail Tuesday, October 4th, but the weather worried him. Echo Lake had rain and snow Tuesday, Wednesday, and part of Thursday. Thursday morning Dave announced that we could leave for the trail that afternoon.

We began our trip to Lake Tahoe around 3:00 pm, Thursday, October 6th, and found a motel there around 10:00 pm. It was a long drive and we were both exhausted. The morning came way too soon. It was 37 degrees when we left the motel at 8:00 am. We grabbed some breakfast and when we got to Echo Lake it was already 57 degrees - perfect hiking weather! It was sunny with just a few clouds.

I hiked with Dave for about 2 miles. He had gotten used to running into other hikers on the trail, or hiking with them, and was not looking forward to being alone on this trek. Most, if not all, of the PCT hikers are past this point. It was tough leaving him. He is still sore, even with two weeks of rest. He has a nerve under his left clavicle that was bothering him in Washington, and it was there again today. The pack is just not sitting right on him now. Since he's lost weight, the pack has shifted. We tried adjusting it, but nothing seemed to help too much. I offered to take him back home, but he is determined to complete every step of the PCT.

Dave and I said our goodbyes and he headed off. As I hiked back my spirits were lifted because I kept running into hikers! 13 in all passed me in those two miles. While Dave is around Echo Lake, I'm sure he won't be alone for at least some of the time.

I had a long drive ahead of me, so I got in the car and began driving around 11:30, making my way back to Duarte. As I approached Monrovia, Dave's Spot came in. That was 6:46 pm. He got to his camp before I got home!

Tonight, Thursday October 7th, Dave is camping at Dick's Lake at PCT mile 1109.5. He made 15 miles today. He had originally thought he'd make 23 miles, but after looking at the elevation (over 2000 feet up), he decided to be smart, get slowly back into hiking, and stop where there was water. There is some water concern along this part of the trail, but with good planning, Dave should never run out of water. With the moisture that these mountains just got, he's in good shape water wise.

Although Dave was reluctant to get back on the trail, this is something he felt he had to do. Amanda and Dave O, Dave really appreciated your texts that you sent. I'm asking everyone, in the next couple of weeks, to send him a text or two. Nothing more than that. He won't always have phone signal, but when he does, the encouragement from the texts really helps. Since he's basically alone for this part of the trail, I know he'd love to hear from his family and friends. His number is 626-241-6407.

Recovery week

Wednesday, September 29th, Dave is recovering at Big Bear. We plan on heading down to Duarte tomorrow afternoon.

Dave will be studying the elevation gain/losses in the last 412 miles of the PCT. Although he is not anxious to be getting that pack on his back again, he does want to hike what he can.

The current plan being looked at is to get Dave back on the trail at Echo Lake on Monday, October 4th. It is just a plan, so things can change. As plans are finalized, we'll update everyone. You may even seen more pictures by this weekend, I just need to get them from Dave and upload them.

Dave has a 3 to 4 inch beard that is wavy, which makes him look like this picture of an old German man we have on our wall here at Big Bear. I'll add that to the pictures.

Other than that, all is well with Dave. His feet are sore but feeling better. His sciatic nerve is giving him problems, but I've got him on a Vitamin "I" routine to see if it can reduce the swelling.

Happy Birthday to Dave's Mom, Ginger!!!! We love you!

Back in the States - Seattle

It was a long day waiting for Dave to call, Sunday, September 26th. He's had a day of traveling. He got on a bus in Manning Park, Canada, at 11:10 am. He got into Vancouver around 3:30 this afternoon. He went through Customs around 4:30, and then bought an Amtrak ticket to get to Seattle. While Dave was looking for an Amtrak train, his Amtrak bus was loading passengers and getting ready to depart, without Dave. An employee saw him and mentioned the bus. Dave got on with only a few moments to spare. He's currently traveling on that bus to Seattle.

Dave wanted to get a flight out tonight to Ontario Airport or Los Angeles Airport, however there were no flights (unless you count the flight from Seattle leaving at 11:30, stopping in Chicago, then stopping in Phoenix, then arriving in Ontario at 11:00 tomorrow morning.

He decided to stay the night and get a flight out in the morning. Dave will be staying at the Motel 6 near the airport. He'll then get a Southwest flight out at 10:00 am tomorrow morning, arriving at the Ontario Airport at 1:55 tomorrow afternoon.

We'll then head directly up to Big Bear where Dave will rest, eat well, watch sports and news. His spirits brightened when I mentioned that the Monday Night Football Game is the Packers vs Bears!! It'll be great having him home!

Happy Birthday Katie!!

Manning Park, British Columbia, Canada

Today, Saturday September 25th, Dave walked into Manning Park. He still has no cell phone service, but he called me using a calling card.

He is tired, worn out, and has a head cold. He is coming home. He's asked me to pick him up at the Ontario Airport (if we can find him a good flight) and take him directly up to Big Bear for some rest and relaxation. We are not sure how he is going to get to Seattle, but he'll work on that tomorrow. Tonight he was going to eat, shower, and sleep.

What about the 412 miles left in California? That is still unknown. Dave feels he's really done what he set out to do. He has hiked the hardest, coldest, and wettest parts of the PCT. Most of the PCT Through Hikers I've met have skipped parts of the trail here and there for many different reasons. We'll get Dave rested and see what the remainder of the year will bring for him.

Where were you when Dave crossed into Canada??

The weather report for Manning Park shows rain, which I'm sure Dave is sick of! I've looked at Echo Lake to Castella weather and it is sunny and warm for the next week at least. Dave will be happy to be back in California with our sunny weather!

Look for at least one more update today when he makes it to Manning Park, British Columbia, Canada!!!

They hiked 13.5 miles today. Dave had mentioned that this was tough hiking so he knew the miles per day would slow down. Zero and Fire Marshall's Spots came in just about the same time. It's good that they are staying together

I also forgot to mention that Stehekin, small as it was, had the correct type of fuel that he would need. This is the first spot in all of Washington that carried this fuel. This would be the one location that he received a package of fuel that I sent! Better late than never!

Zero had been planning on hiking into Canada with Dave, but his parents were unable to locate his passport. Dave has his passport card which will not let him fly. I went to the post office to overnight his passport to him. I was told that it would take 3 to 5 business days to get it to Manning Park. Because of this, I did not mail it. If it takes 5 business days, Dave will already be back in the States. His plan is to get a bus or train from Vancouver to Seattle. Hopefully he'll meet up with Zero in Seattle or in Sacramento so they can finish the 412 miles together.

Stehekin, Washington

Dave did get into Stehekin, Washington yesterday and spent the night there with Zero, Fire Marshall, and Redhead. Tonight they will get a bus ride back to the trail head at PCT mile 2574.

There is no cell phone reception, but Dave was able to purchase a calling card for the satellite phone that is available to hikers from the National Forest Service. He called around 10:45 am, but I was on a conference call, so he left a message. Then he called back around 2:30 pm. I could hear him perfectly, but he could not hear me. He did say it was storming, and that it may be interfering with his call. He tried back two more times.

He said that they are staying a place where you can only get to by boat or plane (or hiking!), The people staying at Lake Shilon were trying to get away from civilization, where Dave and the guys were trying to find civilization!

Three days ago, Dave had 5 encounters with different bears. All, thankfully, uneventful. They have had deer in their camp. It really is in the middle of nowhere!

When they got off the trail yesterday, they took a bus ride (in an old red bus) to Steheiken. When they tried to pay for their bus fair, they found that it was already paid for by some tourists. When in town, they went to a bakery and others bought them pastries. Dave said that this adventure has shown him that there are many thoughtful and kind people in this world.

All Dave's packages arrived, including the Canadian Whiskey that I had recently sent. Bad news is that the Whiskey bottle must have opened somewhere along the way - there was no liquid in it!! Good news is that Dave has food and fuel!

I will be overnighting Dave's passport to him. He found that in order to fly out of Canada, he'll need more than his passport card. If he doesn't get the passport in time, he'll take a bus to Seattle and fly out from there. At this point, it looks like Zero will be traveling with him, sticking together so they can hike the California section together (412 miles). Zero's feet have gotten pretty sore and he figured why hike 60 miles off the trail when he can save that for the California section!

Dave figures he'll be in Canada in 5 to 6 days. This portion of the trail has been pretty difficult. The elevation changes have been very dramatic. The rain has not made it easier.

Good news on the weather, it looks like our hikers will be having some nice weather. Thursday is the only day with rain in the forecast (besides tonight!). It'll be nice for them to be dry for a bit!

Dave also mentioned that he had not hit his Spot the last two nights because of rain and last night being in a building. He most likely won't hit his Spot tonight because he'll be at the trail head.

Here is an invite to anyone in the LA area - Dave wants to hike from Baden Powell to Little Jimmy (approximately 7 miles) upon his return. When Dave was hiking that location here in the San Gabriel Mountains, there was a PCT reroute in place. Most PCT hikers went around Baden Powell, as did Dave. He now that wants to go back and hike that section now that it is open. He wants to get a group together to hike this section with him. Are you interested? This will take place on a weekend and we'll end the hike with a BBQ. (or should I say a CigarBQ!). As we get closer to Dave finishing the 412 mile stretch in California we'll set a date. I'll be providing more information about the hike, but you can let me know if you are interested in hiking with Dave!

Stekehin?

It's 8:00 pm, Sunday September 19th and I've not seen a Spot for either Dave or Team Far Sight. I know that Dave has had trouble with his (could be his batteries). If the guys made the 14 mile hike into Stehekin, then Zero would not hit his Spot. I'll keep watching.

I tracked the last package that I had sent to Dave (their celebration Whiskey) to Stehekin. The Postal Service attempted to deliver the package to the Stehekin Post Office, and it was taken back to Wenatchee. They have left a signature card at Stehekin, but I know that there is no way Dave would take time to go to Wenatchee. These smaller Post Offices are only open a few hours, but I'm surprised that packages are not delivered to them. I'll call them in the morning.

The guys hiked 22 miles today. They are on track for hitting the Canadian border on September 22nd. I had planned a weekend away with some girl friends, but it looks like I'll be picking Dave up in Sacramento instead.

If you look at Google maps and look at the map via satellite you'll see that there is a lot of snow. I'm sure that the satellite is not real time, but I do know that they will be hiking through snow. I'll be interested to find out just how much snow there is. With the rain, the snow could be causing some issues.

I'm expecting the guys to get into their last Washington resupply town tomorrow. I've told Dave to find a pay phone if his cell doesn't work. We'll see what the town of Stehekin has in store for the guys.

Since the guys were trying to hike 20 miles per day, I did some investigating. They have had constant rain. Today they also hiked from 5,500 feet, up to 6,400 feet, down to 3,700 feet and back up to 6,000 feet. With all that elevation gain and all the rain, it only figures that the guys would find a good spot to camp for the night. They may have been surprised with a hut that provided them extra shelter.

Another theory is that the guys realized that they would not make it into Stehekin until Sunday and the Post Office would be closed. They may have decided to take some easy days and get into town on Monday. We'll find out soon enough.

The best news is that next week they should have sunshine. That would be a great way to finish the hiking into Canada.

Update on Dave's location September 17th

Dave's Spot came in this morning at 7:37 am. I'm gathering that due to rain last night, the Spot was signaled this morning. Let's hope that means they are having some respite from the rain. The Spot confirmed that they camped last night at PCT mile 2526. Today they will be hiking close to and around Milk Lake Glacier. See PCT Half Mile map Washington Section K page 7.

The guys plan is to hike approximately 20 miles each day. There is a water crossing at PCT mile 2547 where a bridge had washed out. My guess is that the guys will hike to the water crossing and camp there tonight. It is always safer to cross water early in the morning when the water is cold and flowing slower. As the day warms, the water moves more rapidly, being more dangerous to cross.

I had originally thought that the guys would get into Stehekin tomorrow, but it looks like it will be Sunday. They may need to stay until Monday to get their packages from the Post Office.

Mt. Baker National Forest near Kennedy Peak

Dave's Spot once again did not come in. Thankfully he's hiking with Zero and Fire Marshall who have their Spots fully functional.

Tonight Team Far Sight's Spot came in just prior to 8:00 pm, Thursday September 16th. They are at PCT mile 2526, having walked 21 miles today. They are due west of Kennedy Peak. Check out the PCT Half Mile map Washington Section K page 7. If all is going well, they are with Redhead too.

Skykomish Peak - past PCT mile 2500!

Dave's Spot did not come in once again tonight. I know, however, that he is meeting up each night with Zero, Fire Marshall, and Redhead. Team Far Sight's Spot came in just prior to 8:00 pm tonight, Wednesday, September 15th. They are camping at PCT mile 1505, near Skykomish Peak. 23 miles today is great for the type of terrain they are walking in. Check out the PCT Half Mile maps Washington Section K page 4.

http://www.pctmap.net/download/p/mapdl.html

I've sent a surprise package of Canadian Whiskey to Dave at his final resupply location just prior to getting to the boarder. If the package arrives in one piece, the boys will have the chance to celebrate this milestone!

I've also sent off two additional packages to some California resupply locations for the very last leg of Dave's trip. I was told at the Post Office today that after a package arrives, the Post Office holds on to it for 15 days and then sends it back. I've got 4 other boxes ready to go, but don't want to get them in the mail too soon. Timing is everything! I've also put fuel in each package, so they all need to go ground, which takes at least a week. I may have to call some of these resupply locations, either post offices or stores, and make sure they hold on to the packages. I don't want Dave getting to any location without his resupplies. I've gotten tracking numbers and will keep a watch on them.

Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy, but rain follows for the next few days. They may have some sun on Sunday as they leave Stehekin, Washington (yes, the last resupply location that they should get to on Saturday at PCT mile 2574). I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Dave will get more than the Whiskey at this resupply!

Skykomish & Lake Valhalla

Dave called this morning as he was 2 miles from the road that leads into Skykomish. He was tired, but looking forward to getting into town, resupplying, and getting back on the trail.

We were concerned, because the last to resupply locations did not have Dave's packages. We knew that one package I had sent to Skykomish was at the Dinsmore's. I had mailed another package from Wisconsin and sent it to the Post Office. Sure enough, that package was not there today. That means Dave has no fuel. He said that he'd go through the food that I had sent, his left overs, and then would figure out the fuel issue. On a good note, Washington allows campfires lower in elevation than California and even Oregon. He'll be able to make campfires when its not raining. Zero did receive the package of fuel that I sent him last week from California.

Dave did let me know that all four guys are still together. He was hiking near Zero today. But all four, Dave, Zero, Fire Marshall, and Redhead meet up each night a their predetermined spot.

The Spot came in tonight around 7:00 at PCT mile 2482, at the north end of Lake Valhalla. They now have less than 200 miles to Canada. Dave mentioned that the guys wanted to do a bit of "celebrating" at the boarder. I found some Canadian Whiskey and will get it overnighted to them for their last stop. See PCT Half Mile map Washington Section K page 1.

http://www.pctmap.net/download/p/mapdl.html

Dave was excited to relay his first bear story. As he was walking along the trail he saw a bear charging toward the trail. This was an adolescence bear. When the bear got about 15 feet from Dave it must have realized that he was there and the bear turned around and ran away. No drama. He also said that they had minimal rain today and that he could finally see Washington. He was amazed at just how beautiful the state is!

Just over a week until Dave crosses into Canada and I get to see him again. I'm packing boxes this week to send between Echo Lake and Castella. I've decided that I'll work with the Post Office to track each package!

Lake Susan Jane

Dave's Spot didn't come in tonight. I did check Team Far Sight's Spot and it came in at 7:40. They are camping at PCT mile 2471.5 at Lake Susan Jane.

Check out Team Far Sight's Spot:

http://www.teamfarsight.org/ (under tracking)

They are about 4 miles from town, Skykomish, WA. I was thinking they'd get into town today, but traveling is staying at 20 miles per day due to the terrain. They have encountered hills - or should I say mountains. Tomorrow should be downhill into town. They can pick up their resupplies and then get back on the trail or take a much needed day of rest.

Hopefully I'll hear from Dave tomorrow and remind him to push the button on his Spot - he must have been so very tired today to forget to push it or too tired to let it sit long enough.

Ridge above Hyas Lake

Dave's Spot came in about 7:30 tonight, Sunday, September 12th. He is camping at PCT mile 2451 which is on a ridge above Hyas Lake. You can check out PCT Half Mile map California Section J page 5.

The weather said that it was going to rain all day. I'm hoping Dave will have better hiking weather tomorrow.

Zero and Fire Marshall's Spot came in about 6:45. They are camping at the same spot that Dave is at. I'm hoping that they are still camping with Redhead too.

I may hear from Dave tomorrow if he has cell service (or maybe a pay phone). I'm just hoping that he receives some resupplies.

Cooper River - Wenatchee National Forest

Dave's Spot came in at 7:50, Saturday September 11th. He hiked 21 miles today, camping near Cooper River. See PCT Half Mile map Washington Section J page 3.

Although it looks it's rained most of today, Dave should have been able to set up his tent without rain. Rain should start again around 1:00 am and rain most of tomorrow. Monday the rain should let up, but he'll be heading into Skykomish to see if he's received any resupply boxes. So far, Washington has been swallowing his resupplies!!

Team Far Sight (Zero and Fire Marshall) and Readhead are all camping with Dave at Cooper River. All Spots came in at the same location. Looks like they had some switchbacks today!

Our hikers hiked uphill at first (elevation 5300 ft to 6000 ft). Then the trail took them downhill to 3200 feet, and once more up to 5600 feet. Tomorrow will start out with downhill going from 5600 feet to 3000 feet, then back up to 5600 feet and ending around 4000 feet. All that will be done in the rain. I'm hoping the trail is not too slippery, especially for Zero.

Ridge Lake

Dave's Spot came in tonight, September 10th, around 7:00 pm. He is camping at the south end of Ridge Lake at PCT mile 2410.

I had the chance to talk to Dave again this morning. He told me that he needed to buy some food to resupply and then he and the guys would be off. Since they would get a late start, he did not expect to hike too many miles. Looks like they did just over 9 miles. See PCT Half Mile map Washington Section J page 1.

Thanks to Orange Pacer for getting us the information on the Chevron Station. I passed this on to Dave this morning. He had already looked at each package in that cooler! No packages.

My cousin Kris got me in touch with her cousin Ben who lives near Seattle. He lives too far to ask him to drive to Dave with fuel (5 1/2 round trip drive), but Ben did have some suggestions. He has a friend who will be driving past Snoqualmie Pass tomorrow and could bring Dave fuel, but Dave needed to get back on the trail today. Ben's other thought was that at Dave's next resupply location, there is a little store with camping supplies. I called the store/gas station at Ben's suggestion and sure enough, they have the fuel there for purchase. The Dinsmore's Hiker Haven is also at that location. They should also have a package that I had sent early on. My suggestion to Dave was to call them and ask them to open the box to see if there was fuel in it.

Today may be my last call from Dave until he reaches Canada. He's been told that cell signals are rare in this area. I told him to watch out for payphones! We need to hear from him because we are curious about his adventures.

Team Far Sight (Zero and Fire Marshall) and Redhead are all with Dave at Ridge Lake. Their goal is to hike to the Canadian Border together. Dave will continue 8 miles to Manning Park and then take a bus to the Vancouver airport. Zero, Fire Marshall, and Redhead will stop at the border, hike 20 miles to the nearest road, get a hitch to the Amtrak station, and get a ride to Sacramento. At least, this is the current plan. As I've found out on this Adventure, plans change all the time!

13 - 14 days until CANADA!!!!!

(if Dave hikes 20 miles each day - then another 400 miles in California)

Snoqualmie Pass, WA

Tonight Dave called in with only 4 miles to go until he got into Snoqualmie Pass. We had a chance to talk about the previous days.

First, I had thought Dave camped the other night with Boy Scouts (bad cell phone reception). He really camped with the Cowboys. There were two couples, Master Chef and his wife McNaughton and Sawblade with his wife Pink. Dave named them all. They introduced him to McNaughton whisky, now Dave's favorite (although I think anything out of the ordinary on the trail could be considered his favorite!).

The night Dave and the guys met up was at a shelter / cabin like structure. It had 4 walls and a wood burning stove. Dave was the first one there, but by the end of the night there were 8 hikers staying there. Everyone needed to get out of the rain.

Last night they camped on or just off of a road. Dave estimated they did 22 miles yesterday, and about the same today. He hasn't seen much of Washington due to the fog and rain.

Dave talked about the Trail Magic. He and Zero were hiking together and were wet and cold. Out of nowhere they found a guy "Not Phil's Dad" who was out hunting. Hunting season (I believe bow hunting) just started. Not Phil's Dad had a tent up, with extra hot cocoa, chili and hot dogs that he shared with Dave and Zero. Not Phil's Dad is truly contributing to the Trail Magic! He is called Not Phil's Dad because pf his son, "Not Phil". Not Phil hiked the PCT last year.

Dave said that he would hike for miles and miles and miles and miles with no water... and as he approaches these small towns he finds rivers. You would think that with all this rain there would be ample water locations!

Dave also talked about the climbing up hills and down hills, the cold, and the rain. The sad thing is that he couldn't see much of what he was hiking due to the rain and fog. His quote tonight is "I"m sure Washington is a beautiful State, if I could see it!". He ran into two hunters who agreed that Washington was beautiful. They call the rain "liquid sunshine". Dave said it would be more beautiful if it were moonshine! Although he's miserable, he does have quite a sense of humor! Someone told him that Washington has a lot of old growth. Dave commented that all he needs to do is look at a mirror to see old growth!

He feels that he is getting used to the rain, or at least learning to cope with it. After two days, his goal is to find some sort of shelter to dry off and get warm. Things are so wet that his skin is getting loose (that could be weight loss too). He has a stone bruise on his food and his hip is really sore from his backpack, but these are minor and he knows he can push past this.

Dave's resupplies did not show up at the Chevron station. I sent his food from Wisconsin. Ground takes much longer than I had thought. He'll be able to purchase food here at least. The package I sent to Zero with clothing did show up. Zero also had some spare fuel that he is sharing with Dave. I've got a call into the next resupply location to see if he has his packages there. If not, we've got a few plans. We know someone who knows someone in Seattle. If needed, we'll send some resupplies for Monday. It is very frustrating to spend time purchasing, packing, and mailing items that don't get to him in time. I guess this week I'll start mailing packages to the California stops to insure that they are waiting for him! I, personally, will be thankful when this resupplying is over!!

I gave Dave the forecast for the next 5 days. No matter what I said, scattered showers, partly cloudy, sun, etc, his reply was, that means rain. There is just no let up of these showers. The temp may hit the high 50s, but averages high 40's. There is just not enough sun to warm things up.

Dave was walking through a forest today socked in with fog. The sun was trying to peak through, but all it did was make the fog look green.

It was nice talking to Dave even though spirits were dampened by not getting his supplies. He's staying at the Howard Johnsons. The HJ employee is going to call the Post Office in the morning to see if Dave's packages are there. If not, he'll just purchase food and move on. One way or another, his hike must go on.

Wenatchee National Forest - Snaggle Tree Peak

Dave's Spot came in at 7:00 Wednesday September 8th. He is camping new Snaggle Tree Peak, just west of it, at PCT mile 2379. The notes on the PCT Half Mile maps say that there is a spring and soggy ground at this point. You can check out the Half Mile maps Washington Section I page 11.

UrichCamp - Urich Camp at Government Meadow

Dave's Spot came in tonight around 7:00 pm. He is at PCT mile 2355.5, camping at or near Urich Camp at Government Meadow. It looks like he hiked 14.2 miles today. You can check out PCT Half Mile maps Washington Section I page 8.

http://www.pctmap.net/download/p/mapdl.html

I'm not sure why only 14 miles were completed today. If you look at the last pages on the Half Mile maps Section I, under page 8 you can see the elevation gain and loss. It looks like Dave had a relatively flat hike today. It could be that the weather was bad and he needed to dry off. This week is going to be full of rain for him!

You can also see Dave's Google Map Spot location at the following link:

http://www.findmespot.com/mylocation/?id=3RCmC/47.08938/\-121.39572

It looks like Zero, Fire Marshall, and Redhead have caught up with Dave. Their Spot came in at the same time Dave's did and their Google maps are almost identical. They are about 1/2 mile from Naches Trail. I Expressed mailed Zero his clothes today that he had requested. They are not scheduled to hit Snoqualmie Pass until Thursday, which is at PCT mile 2402. Dave thought he'd get their tomorrow afternoon, but now it will most likely be Thursday.

Dave is needing fuel and he should get it when he arrives in Snoqualmie. He's been using campfires to cook food, saving his fuel. Two nights ago, he ran into some scouts who had a fire. He asked if he could warm up by their fire, and they invited him to stay. He even was able to cook over their fire. Zero, too, is running low on fuel. I've forwarded some to him to the stop after Snoqualmie. Hopefully, he'll have enough fuel to last him.

Labor Day on the PCT - near Basin Lake, WA

Dave's Spot came in around 7:25 pm Labor Day, September 6th. He is camping at PCT mile 2341.3, just prior to Scout Pass Trail junction. He called prior to the end of his hiking with very spotty cell phone service. He let me know that although he was tired and wanted to stop for the day, he had to keep going because he needed water. He had some, so he didn't have to reach water, but Dave is thorough. He has never run out of water because water is always on his mind. He's not taking any chances. We'll see, next time he calls, if he located that water he was looking for!

Check out Dave's Spot on Google maps:

More rain - heading towards Snoqualmie Pass

Dave's Spot came in at 7:47 pm, Sunday August 5th. He has passed Twin Sisters Lake and is at approximately PCT mile 2321.5. He was aiming for at least 15 miles today, estimating that leaving town later would not leave him enough time to hike his normal 25 miles. He also said that his pack was always heavier on the first day out of a town. However, it looks like he did 18.5 miles. You can check out the PCT Half Mile maps Washington Section I page 3.

http://www.pctmap.net/download/p/mapdl.html

You can also see the Google Map from tonight's spot:

When I talked to him this morning he told me that he had forgotten to mention the wildlife that he had seen recently. First there was the bobcat, then the elk and deer. Two nights ago he say a herd of Mountain Goats. The goats were not too disturbed by Dave when he set up camp near them. Although the weather was suppose to be sunny but cold, as Dave was getting on the trail it was drizzling rain. As Dave O said, go figure - rain in Washington! True words Dave O!

It looks like Zero, Fire Marshall, and I believe Redhead, hiked into White Pass today for resupplies. The got right back on the trail and hit their Spot at 7:13 pm. They are camping on the north side of Beusch Lake at PCT mile 2309. Zero's friend Lane called me and told me that Zero is cold. (Dave too mentioned that it was so miserably cold). Zero had sent some items to our house from the trai - things that were not needed and too heavy to keep with him. I'll be going through these items tomorrow and get them in the mail for Zero - hopefully to be at their next location - Snoqualmie Pass on Thursday of this week. We must keep our hikers as happy as we can to help them complete this adventure!

White Pass

Dave called in tonight, Saturday August 4th. He was just reaching the road that he would walk for a 1/2 mile into White Pass (small town of Naches, WA). He was looking forward to getting a room, hot shower, and a bed to sleep on, but he was worried about this being Labor Day weekend and all the rooms being taken. White Pass is at PCT mile 2303. Dave was happy to check off another hundred miles!

See the PCT Half Mile Map Washington Section H page 20.

http://www.pctmap.net/download/p/mapdl.html

Today's hike was one for the books. He hiked over "Great Rocks" at about 7,000 feet. This area is full of shale and loose rocks, and has very steep slopes on both sides of the trail. Normally, this wouldn't be an issue, but the gusting winds and white out conditions (not snow - he was hiking in the clouds) made the trip very perilous. The wind knocked him off his feet at one point. There were several miles of this hiking, but Dave made it through to tell his story.

Getting into town, we hung up and I waited for his call once he was settled and knew where he'd be sleeping. Dave met up with Green Tortuga and is sharing a room with him tonight. Have a look at Greet Tortuga's web page: www.anotherlongwalk.com

Dave had picked up his resupply packages but didn't find any fuel. I've sent so many packages that I've lost track of where I've sent fuel. I thought I had sent some fuel to this location from California, but I'm thinking that Dave may have two fuels at his next location at Snoqulmie Pass on Wednesday. He thinks he has enough fuel to get him through the next couple of days.

Dave has 357 miles (approximately) to Manning Park in Canada. His goal is currently 25 miles per day. At this rate it will take him 14-15 days to reach Manning Park. If he travels 20 miles per day it will take him 17-18 days. The average puts him at getting into Manning Park on the 20th as previously estimated.

Weather.com is saying that he'll have cold but sunny days Sunday and Monday, with Rain on Tuesday for White Pass. The weather for Snoqulmie also shows rain for Wednesday, but sun for Thursday and showers Friday. Most of the rain days are only 30% chance of rain. These rain showers should not bother Dave too much - the thunder showers were what soaked him. He also has gotten some large garbage bags to doubly protect his gear. This coming week will be a challenge for Dave. Keep him in your prayers!

Dave ran into a hiker today who had passed Zero, Fire Marshall, and Redhead and reported them doing well. The guys hit their Spot tonight at 7:30. There were two Spots received tonight from them. It looks like they are still not camping together. It could be that Zero is having fun hiking alone again. They are camping near / around Lutz Lake which is at PCT mile 2290. You can check out PCT Half Mile map Washington Section H page 18. They should arrive at White Pass (town of Naches, WA) tomorrow early to mid day. Dave will be calling in the morning to find out where the guys are. They are all hoping to cross into Canada together or at least close together.

Crispus River

Dave's Spot came in at 7:10 pm, Friday September 3rd. He is camping near the Crispus River in the Snoqualmie National Forest at PCT mile 2280.5 at about 6,000 feet. He hiked approximately 23 miles today. He has another 23.5 miles to hike tomorrow into Naches, Washington at White Pass. I'm sure he's been carrying to much food - and will have new resupply food tomorrow. After I had sent out his resupply packages, he called and told me that he'd be hiking less miles each day and would need additional food. He's now keeping to his original schedule. I'd rather have him get more food than less food!

We had not heard from, nor seen a Spot for Zero, Fire Marshall, and Redhead. Finally, last night around 8:30, they hit their Spot. They were camping at approximately PCT mile 2248. They were just west of Mt. Adams, following the White Salmon River, although according to the Spots, they did not camp together. One Spot was at PCT mile 2241, approximately 4,850 feet. The other Spot was at PCT mile 2242, approximately 5,000 feet. You can see where they are on the PCT Half Mile maps Washington Section H page 12.

Since it's not even 8:00 in the West Coast, I didn't expect to see their Spot quite yet. We'll keep watching for them. I'm thinking they'll get into White Pass late tomorrow night or sometime on Sunday. We'll keep tracking them.

Muddy Fork - Lava Spring???

Dave's Spot came in tonight, Thursday September 2nd, at 7:50 pm. He is camping between Muddy Fork and Lava Spring at a campground at PCT mile 2257.5. When Dave called me this morning, he told me that he wanted to hike 20 miles today. He was getting a late start because he found a kind soul to get him back the 13.8 miles to the trail. When he's on the trail, he gets out early. When he's in town, he takes what help he can get, but that means getting out later on the trail than normal.

He's camping next to an old lava flow. His goal is to get into his next resupply location, White Pass, by Saturday.

It's been a couple nights since Zero and Fire Marshall have hit their Spot. Dave has left messages on the trail for them, but is afraid the rain may have washed them away. We believe the guys were in town last night and maybe they've not yet stopped for the night. I'll keep looking for their Spot.

It was such a pleasure to hear Dave sound so good again this morning. He was complaining about all the food I had sent him, and that his pack was so heavy, but at least he has warm clothing and plenty of food. I reminded him to eat the heavy food first! He has several boxes of food and supplies waiting for him in White Pass at the Kracker Barrel Store. The last package I sent him has new medium weight wool socks, cookies, and more oatmeal.

Trout Lake - Dave is back!

Well, what a difference a day makes.

Dave slept well last night even though it stormed all night. Everything he had was either damp or wet, but his down kept him warm. He didn't stay in his tent until the rain moved on, but he got up and hiked the 10 miles to road 23. There he found three other hikers. Before long, a car came by and offered them a ride, but only had room for three. Since Dave was in last, he stayed behind. The driver said that he'd come back for Dave. Dave had hoped that Zero, Fire Marshall, and Redhead would show up by then. After 45 minutes, a truck came by and gave Dave a ride into Trout Lake. There was no sign of the guys.

Last night, the other guys stopped around 9:40 and were about 5 miles behind Dave. Dave figures that they will show up sometime tonight in town. Dave is staying at a motel about a mile outside of town where a handful of other hikers are staying. Laundry is almost done, packages have been picked up, the backpack needs to be repacked, warm clothes are being worn, and a new attitude is surrounding Dave. He said that the continuous rain dampened his spirits. Dave is looking forward to getting on the trail early tomorrow and already has a ride set up to get him back to the trail. There isn't rain in the forecast until Tuesday. Dave is hoping to put some miles between him and the rain.

And so, the hike continues... with a smile. Dave thanks everyone for their prayers. He askes them to keep on coming. (He's asking for minimal rain.) I thank everyone for their prayers. After my conversation with Dave last night I was worried, as much for his emotional well being as for his health. He's promised that his health is great. The emotions are up and down, but thankfully more up than down.

Dave didn't hit his spot tonight, but he is at Trout Lake. He left the trail at PCT mile 2237, at road 23, and is another 13.8 miles into town.

Mosquito Lake

Dave will not be pushing his Spot tonight. He called at 7:00 and told me that it was pouring rain. The Spot has to be outside to work. He is camping at Mosquito Lake, PCT mile 2227. See the PCT Half Mile maps, Washington Section H page 10.

It has been raining for two days now and Dave's spirits were very low. I checked the weather at Trout Lake (his destination tomorrow) and it looks like constant rain until tomorrow around noon. I told him to stay in his tent and try to rest, wait for the rain to stop, get into town and get a room.

To get to Trout Lake he'll hike 10 miles to PCT mile 2237.5 at Road 23. Then he'll need to find a ride into town 13.8 miles.

The very first thing he said to me today after saying hello was, "would you hate me if I came home". He and I have a pact. The minute he needs to come home, he leaves the trail and cmes home. I've told him that if he gets into town and gets a good night sleep in a motel, he should ask himself then if he still wants to come home. He is so close to Canada, but this rain is making him miserable. Cold is one thing, but being wet is making him unhappy.

Thursday should be a clear day, with Friday and Saturday both having scattered showers. When he gets into Trout Lake, he'll pick up some resupplies (mainly food I've sent and clothing he forwarded). having dry clothes will make him feel better.

Keep Dave in your thoughts and prayers. He needs to make the decision that is best for him.

Well into Washington

Dave's Spot came in on Monday August 30th at 7:44 pm. He is camping at or near a campground which has a good reliable water source. It is at PCT mile 2202. Check out his Spot on Google map:

It looks like our hikers are all camping together and making great miles. Their next stop is at White Pass where Dave will have at least three packages of resupplies. Dave kept adding to his list of things needed, days needed, socks, etc. I've also received another package back from Dave with items that weighted too much and that he wasn't using. He says that every time he tries to lighten his bag, it just seems heavier. Dave said it is most likely a strength issue, not a weight of the bag issue. I've sent him lots of treats, and am hoping to put a few extra pounds on him.

Slideshow of Mt. Shasta and Oregon

Day 1 in Washington - Gifford Pinchot National Forest

Sunday August 29th, Dave is camping near PCT mile 2174.5. He has found a spot near Rock Creek, just prior to Snag Creek. Check out his Spot on Google Maps:

It looks like Team Far Sight's Spots are at the same location as Dave (both Fire Marshall and Zero have a Spot). I'm guessing that Redman is also there camping with them, at least that was the plan.

I've been working on posting the slide show to the blog and believe that I've finally figured out how to do this. Enjoy the pictures!.

The Hiker Vortex

Dave spent Saturday, August 28th, camping again at Cascade Locks. Seems while enjoying Trail Days, Dave bought raffle tickets. The raffle started at 4:30 and ended around 6:30. Dave decided to stay the night with Zero, Fire Marshall, and Redman.

Although Dave was looking forward to getting back on the trail today, and regretting that he had not left yesterday, he was rather lucky in the raffle! He said that he won over $300 worth of items, including bladders for his Camelbaks and some certificates. I'll get a full list of items later. He didn't want to talk too long - the trail was not calling his name, but shouting it!

Zero was interviewed yesterday by the Oregonian Newspaper. The picture used, however, is of Fire Marshall and Girl Friday.

The guys have uphill to hike today and the weather looks like rain. Dave has gotten rid of most of his clothing (boxing and sending it forward to Trout Lake due to weight) and is not looking forward to being wet without being able to dry off.

The best part of staying at Cascade Locks last night was that Dave had a chance to rest. He's feeling strong and ready to tackle Washington. Look out Washington, here comes Dave!

Trail Days Cascade Locks

Last night,Friday August 27th, Dave camped at Cascade Locks. He called this morning to share some of his adventure.

He loved hiking Eagle Creek Trail. Here is a web site on Eagle Creek that Dave asked me to share with you.

http://www.portlandhikersfieldguide.org/wiki/Eagle_Creek_to_Tunnel_Falls_Hike

He loved all the waterfalls. The whole area he described as magical. Heading towards Cascade Locks is a paved trail called the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail. Once in town, Dave went directly to the post office. No one gets mail delivered. Everyone in town has a post office box. Dave was given his package and told that the postal worker was taking her lunch and would be back in an hour to let him forward his package to the next resupply location.

While waiting, Dave charged his camera and phone in the post office. A couple of ladies showed up to get their mail (one 94 and one 73). They spent the hour with Dave, telling him about the history of the area. Dave loves history, and enjoyed his time talking with them.

He also had lunch with Donna Saufley. She is one of the Trail Angels who open their homes up to hikers (near Agua Dulce), although Dave, Zero didn't have the chance to stay at her place. Donna was kind enough to offer the boys her hotel room to take a shower and do their laundry. They gladly accepted. They did camp at the Cascade Locks campground. It was free camping this weekend because it was also Trail Days. He's really enjoying his time there. He loved all the geese flying overhead, the barges and ships on the river, and even the trains added to the charm of the area. There are mountains on both sides of the river and everything is green, super green.

Dave described Trail Days as a mini PCT-Kick Off weekend. He said that he would spend a few hours there today, looking at the vendors, and then get back on the trail. It's after 7:00 pm but I've not yet seen his Spot. I'll keep watching. Dave did say that he wasn't sure how much hiking he'd get in today, but wanted to put in as many miles into Washington as he could. He said that Zero, Fire Marshall, and Redman were leaving today also.

The bridge that goes from Cascade Locks in Oregon to Washington is called the "Bridge of the gods". Originally, it was solid rock, a natural occurance. The river rose and it was washed away. Now here is a metal bridge in it's place. Dave really wishes that he was crossing into Canada, not Washington. I've calculated, at 20 miles hiking per day, that Dave will cross into Canada by September 20th. He'll need to get back on the trail in one or two days and then he'll complete the hike no later than October 11th. This date has changed many times, so I'm expecting that we'll adjust that too!

Dave O and Nick - Dave says thanks for the text and comment - Your support and encouragement really means a lot to him!
