Mosquito Lake

Dave will not be pushing his Spot tonight. He called at 7:00 and told me that it was pouring rain. The Spot has to be outside to work. He is camping at Mosquito Lake, PCT mile 2227. See the PCT Half Mile maps, Washington Section H page 10.

http://www.pctmap.net/download/p/mapdl.html

It has been raining for two days now and Dave's spirits were very low. I checked the weather at Trout Lake (his destination tomorrow) and it looks like constant rain until tomorrow around noon. I told him to stay in his tent and try to rest, wait for the rain to stop, get into town and get a room.

To get to Trout Lake he'll hike 10 miles to PCT mile 2237.5 at Road 23. Then he'll need to find a ride into town 13.8 miles.

The very first thing he said to me today after saying hello was, "would you hate me if I came home". He and I have a pact. The minute he needs to come home, he leaves the trail and cmes home. I've told him that if he gets into town and gets a good night sleep in a motel, he should ask himself then if he still wants to come home. He is so close to Canada, but this rain is making him miserable. Cold is one thing, but being wet is making him unhappy.

Thursday should be a clear day, with Friday and Saturday both having scattered showers. When he gets into Trout Lake, he'll pick up some resupplies (mainly food I've sent and clothing he forwarded). having dry clothes will make him feel better.

Keep Dave in your thoughts and prayers. He needs to make the decision that is best for him.

Well into Washington

Dave's Spot came in on Monday August 30th at 7:44 pm. He is camping at or near a campground which has a good reliable water source. It is at PCT mile 2202. Check out his Spot on Google map:

Also check out the PCT Half Mile Maps Washington Section H page 6:

It looks like our hikers are all camping together and making great miles. Their next stop is at White Pass where Dave will have at least three packages of resupplies. Dave kept adding to his list of things needed, days needed, socks, etc. I've also received another package back from Dave with items that weighted too much and that he wasn't using. He says that every time he tries to lighten his bag, it just seems heavier. Dave said it is most likely a strength issue, not a weight of the bag issue. I've sent him lots of treats, and am hoping to put a few extra pounds on him.

Slideshow of Mt. Shasta and Oregon

Day 1 in Washington - Gifford Pinchot National Forest

Sunday August 29th, Dave is camping near PCT mile 2174.5. He has found a spot near Rock Creek, just prior to Snag Creek. Check out his Spot on Google Maps:

It looks like Team Far Sight's Spots are at the same location as Dave (both Fire Marshall and Zero have a Spot). I'm guessing that Redman is also there camping with them, at least that was the plan.

I've been working on posting the slide show to the blog and believe that I've finally figured out how to do this. Enjoy the pictures!.

The Hiker Vortex

Dave spent Saturday, August 28th, camping again at Cascade Locks. Seems while enjoying Trail Days, Dave bought raffle tickets. The raffle started at 4:30 and ended around 6:30. Dave decided to stay the night with Zero, Fire Marshall, and Redman.

Although Dave was looking forward to getting back on the trail today, and regretting that he had not left yesterday, he was rather lucky in the raffle! He said that he won over $300 worth of items, including bladders for his Camelbaks and some certificates. I'll get a full list of items later. He didn't want to talk too long - the trail was not calling his name, but shouting it!

Zero was interviewed yesterday by the Oregonian Newspaper. The picture used, however, is of Fire Marshall and Girl Friday.

http://www.oregonlive.com/news/index.ssf/2010/08/blind_hiker_trevor_thomas_stop.html

The guys have uphill to hike today and the weather looks like rain. Dave has gotten rid of most of his clothing (boxing and sending it forward to Trout Lake due to weight) and is not looking forward to being wet without being able to dry off.

The best part of staying at Cascade Locks last night was that Dave had a chance to rest. He's feeling strong and ready to tackle Washington. Look out Washington, here comes Dave!

Trail Days Cascade Locks

Last night,Friday August 27th, Dave camped at Cascade Locks. He called this morning to share some of his adventure.

He loved hiking Eagle Creek Trail. Here is a web site on Eagle Creek that Dave asked me to share with you.

http://www.portlandhikersfieldguide.org/wiki/Eagle_Creek_to_Tunnel_Falls_Hike

He loved all the waterfalls. The whole area he described as magical. Heading towards Cascade Locks is a paved trail called the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail. Once in town, Dave went directly to the post office. No one gets mail delivered. Everyone in town has a post office box. Dave was given his package and told that the postal worker was taking her lunch and would be back in an hour to let him forward his package to the next resupply location.

While waiting, Dave charged his camera and phone in the post office. A couple of ladies showed up to get their mail (one 94 and one 73). They spent the hour with Dave, telling him about the history of the area. Dave loves history, and enjoyed his time talking with them.

He also had lunch with Donna Saufley. She is one of the Trail Angels who open their homes up to hikers (near Agua Dulce), although Dave, Zero didn't have the chance to stay at her place. Donna was kind enough to offer the boys her hotel room to take a shower and do their laundry. They gladly accepted. They did camp at the Cascade Locks campground. It was free camping this weekend because it was also Trail Days. He's really enjoying his time there. He loved all the geese flying overhead, the barges and ships on the river, and even the trains added to the charm of the area. There are mountains on both sides of the river and everything is green, super green.

Dave described Trail Days as a mini PCT-Kick Off weekend. He said that he would spend a few hours there today, looking at the vendors, and then get back on the trail. It's after 7:00 pm but I've not yet seen his Spot. I'll keep watching. Dave did say that he wasn't sure how much hiking he'd get in today, but wanted to put in as many miles into Washington as he could. He said that Zero, Fire Marshall, and Redman were leaving today also.

The bridge that goes from Cascade Locks in Oregon to Washington is called the "Bridge of the gods". Originally, it was solid rock, a natural occurance. The river rose and it was washed away. Now here is a metal bridge in it's place. Dave really wishes that he was crossing into Canada, not Washington. I've calculated, at 20 miles hiking per day, that Dave will cross into Canada by September 20th. He'll need to get back on the trail in one or two days and then he'll complete the hike no later than October 11th. This date has changed many times, so I'm expecting that we'll adjust that too!

Dave O and Nick - Dave says thanks for the text and comment - Your support and encouragement really means a lot to him!

Eagle Creek Trail, PCT Alternate route

Dave is within a stone's through of the Columbia trail tonight, August 26th.

He called this morning when he took a break. All along the ridge he was on he had two or three bars on his cell, but also had the message "emergency services only". He sat down and tried calling me again and was happy to have gotten through. He is still hiking through thick forest. He confirmed that Zero was hiking alone and was indeed the hiker at the head of the pack. When Dave stopped last night, Zero was 15 minutes ahead of him. Zero hiked for two additional hours and added 5 to 6 miles. Dave said that he had not seen Fire Marshall. He must have been near, but still a bit behind Dave. Dave has also decided that the PCT is about 1000 miles too long! He can see the end but feels it'll never get here (He repeats this almost every time he and I talk). He needs to walk this hike one day at a time and not think about the end. Dave sounded tired but in good spirits. He knows now that he can emotionally complete this hike. He's just hoping that his body keeps working as good as it has been.

Between PCT mile 2138 and 2155, the PCT hikers have two options. They can continue on the PCT for the 16.5 miles or they can take the Eagle Creek Trail, which is 15.4 miles. According to half Mile, the majority of hikers take the Eagle Creek Trail. Dave also chose this route. Check out PCT Half Mile map Oregon Section G Page 6. Dave is at Eagle Creek Trail mile 6. (Equal to about PCT mile 2144)

Tomorrow we move onto the Washington maps!

Dave has asked if someone would pass a message on to Eric - Dave will need lots of help when he gets back. He's afraid now that he weighs about 130 lbs. Not only is he down to almost nothing in the way of body fat, but he realizes that he is now losing muscle. He will need Eric's help getting that muscle back.

It looks like Zero is already at or near Cascade Locks at PCT mile 2155, which is the last stop before crossing the Columbia River. Fire Marshall is on the Eagle Creek Trail, near or just behind Dave. Dave and Fire Marshall will be meeting up with Zero tomorrow. I'm sure Zero is so happy to have hiked this last leg by himself. What a great accomplishment!

Muddy Fork - Hiker's Bridge

Wednesday, August 25th, Dave's spot came in at 6:45 pm, showing him to be camping at Muddy Fork in the Mt. Hood National Forest. This location is also denoted as Hikerbridge, at PCT mile 2119.5. After packing up camp, he hiked 12.5 miles.

In two days, he should be at the Columbia River, crossing into Washington.

I had also talked to Fire Marshall a bit yesterday. He had mentioned that Zero was looking forward to doing some hiking on his own, yes, all by himself. When I checked their Spot Tracker, I noticed that there were two Spot locations. One was hit a 8:20 pm at PCT mile 2125. The other one was hit at 8:39, and it looks like it is at Muddy Fork with Dave at PCT mile 2119.5. We'll have to wait to find out if it was Zero who is ahead, or if it is Fire Marshall.

Timberline Lodge

Dave made it into Timberline Lodge last night, Tuesday August 24th, after hiking 36 miles, the last was a 1600 feet climb. Dave described this lodging as the "base camp" of Mt. Hood.

A bit of trivia; Timberline Lodge is the Hotel used in the Shining - only the exterior, not the interior.

As Dave walked up to the Timberline Lodge, on the stairs sat Zero, Fire Marshall, and Redman. They had a great reunion. The guys stayed in the woods camping, but Dave got himself a room. It was a small room with a window, a sink, and bunk beds. He shared the shower and toilet with some other guests.

Dave called me this morning after a deep night sleep. He was glad to have had a good night sleep, although he said he could have used more sleep. We talked only a short time because he was joining the guys for breakfast. After his meal, he headed to the store to get his packages, and yes, his maps and GPS were there waiting for him! He checked out the GPS and was happy to see the Washington way points. He had been so eager to check out the packages that he left his current maps and books at the breakfast table. The guys always look out for Dave, and had picked them up and gave me a call, not sure if Dave had already left for the trail.

Luckily Dave was out doing laundry and was still around. They all planned on getting on the trail as quickly as possible. Dave and I also re-looked at his Washington resupply locations. He's in need of another fuel resupply, so I headed out to Cabela's this morning to get him some. I need to get that package out now because it'll have to travel across country going ground. I have 4 new packages to get out in the mail tomorrow.

We'll see just how far the guys get tonight. Oh, and Dave O, Dave asked what you thought about him walking through your State in 18 days! Pretty cool! Hopefully more ictures will be posted tonight or tomorrow. Yesterday's post should have read "picture, picture, picture", not plural pictures!

Update on Team Far Sight

Zero and Fire Marshall hit their Spot last night at 7:39. They are camping at Timothy Lake at PCT mile 2084.5. I've double checked their spot from the day before where they were camping at Scout Lake. It shows that they hiked 43 miles yesterday and are now ahead of Dave by 10.5 miles.

I'm following Dave's package of maps and GPS. It was processed in Milwaukee yesterday afternoon at 3:00 pm Central Time and is on it's way to Oregon. I'll check it again tonight to keep track of how close it is to getting to Dave on time. Dave is starting today at PCT mile 2073. If he hikes another 26 miles he'll camp tonight around PCT mile 2099. That only leaves 8 miles for him to hike tomorrow. He will end up waiting around for his package if it doesn't arrive until the latest scheduled time of 3:00 pm Wednesday. I'm hoping for a sooner delivery!

Mt. Hood in the distance

Tonight, Monday August 23rd, Dave's Spot came in at 7:12 pm. Typically, there is a body of water or a mountain that he is near, so checking out the PCT Half Mile maps makes it pretty easy to find where he is camping. Tonight he's surrounded by dirt country roads, and I'm having issues matching up his Spot to the Half Mile maps.

I see that he is near W250 road and 42 road, so I'm placing him at approximately PCT mile 2073. That would have him hiking 26 miles today. Check out PCT Half Mile maps Oregon Section F page 13.

http://www.pctmap.net/download/p/mapdl.html

My Dad got me to the Post Office today and we mailed Dave's maps for the first portion of Washington and his GPS with all the Way Points for the remainder of the trip. Due to the location we were sending it, the Post Office could not guarantee overnight - but it will be delivered by Wednesday at 3:00 pm. According to Dave's hiking mileage, the package should be there before he gets there (There is Timberline Lodge at PCT mile 2107). I'll be tracking the package to insure it's there. I'm also going to call the Lodge and ask them to put a note on the package that is already there for him (fuel, food, batteries) and let him know that the GPS will be there (just in case he gets in early).

It is now 7:44 and Team Far Sight has not yet signed in. I'll check a bit later and give an update. I've told Dave I'll be watching them so he can call in and check up on them. He's felt bad going ahead and not seeing them - he was so used to seeing them every day. Knowing where they are and that they are safe makes him feel better.

Looking at the big picture of where Dave is, he was near Bend, Oregon last Wednesday and is approaching Mt. Hood. I'm sure he can see it from where he is. Portland is to the West/North West of him.

Mt. Hood National Forest - Breitenbush campground

Dave's Spot came in today at 5:10 pm, Sunday August 22nd. He is camping near Breitenbush Lake, possibly at the Brietenbush Campground at PCT mile 2047. Dave hiked approximately 22 miles today. Check out PCT Half Mile map Oregon Section F page 9.

It continues to look like Dave will hit Washington by Friday. Dave has requested that I download new way points onto his GPS. Sadly, just prior to sending it to me, it got run over by a pickup truck after it slipped off of Dave's backpack. I received the GPS in the mail and tried to download the way points, but it was too damaged. I was ale to pick up a new GPS (same model) and have spent the day attempting to get the way points on the GPS. After a few hours of reading manuals, fighting with lack of information, I believe the GPS is now ready to be overnighted to Dave. Keep your fingers crossed that I've done this successfully!

Zero and Fire Marshall's Spot came in just prior to 7:00 tonight. They are camping near Scout Lake at PCT mile 2041. See the above PCT Half Mile map URL and go to Oregon Section F page 8. The guys are only 6 miles behind Dave and gaining.

Past Carl Lake

Dave called this morning, August 21st. He told me that Thursday night he had camped at the campground with Redman, as the previous blog stated. Also camping was Redman's sister, husband, and in-laws. They fed Dave and Redman and gave them some beers. needless to say Dave got to bed late which meant a late start.

Yesterday, August 20th, Redman and Dave got a ride from Redman's family back to the trail. In getting to the campground they had missed 14 miles of the trail. They got dropped off at their starting point and hiked back into the campground. Yes, that meant another night with food, beer, talking and laughing.

Although Dave had a wonderful time with these folks, he didn't like that he had less sleep than needed. He was dragging this morining when he called. Some days are good days and some days are bad days. Today was a not so good day. He felt tired of being on the trail and is looking forward to coming home He said that no matter how much he hikes he feels like hes not getting any closer to his end. I told him a good night sleep and he'll have a new outlook tomorrow. He agreed.

Tonight, August 21st, Dave's Spot came in at 6:30. He is caming just past Carl Lake, at PCT mile 2025.5. He had quite a bit of climbing today, ending with some leveling off. Dave is at about 6,500 feet now. Tomorrow he'll hike down to 4,500 feet and then back up to almost 7,000 feet.

Check out PCT Half Mile maps, Oregon Section F page 6.

Zero and Fire Marshall have worked hard at catching up to Dave. They are camping at PCT mile 2018 at lake Wasco. They were in Sisters yesterday, but must have made a quick trip of it. They are about 7.5 miles behind Dave. I'm sure it helped that Dave spent time with Redman's family at the camp site. Maybe tomorrow they'll catch up!

Big Lake

Dave got a hitch with Redman and Double D to the Big Lake campground. This is off PCT mile 2004. They camped there last night, Thursday August 19th.

I've not received a spot from him yet tonight. I'm in Wisconsin and we are having a huge thunder storm. Winds were 74 mph during the worst of it. Trees are in the roads and on top of houses. We've lost power, so I may not be able to get out Dave's location tonight. (I'm at my sister's home using her internet, but am not staying here.)

Sisters resupply

Dave called in today, Thursday August 19th. He made it into Sisters and received his resupply. He forwarded me his SD camera card and his GPS so I can upload way points for the remainder of his trip and mail it back to him. He did let me know that as he got out of a pickup truck, his GPS fell out of his backpack and the pickup truck ran over it. He said it turned on, but is keeping his fingers crossed that it will still work. He's camping with Redhead and Double D at a campground near Sisters. I've not received a Spot tonight, but will work towards finding his location tomorrow.

North Sisters, Williamette National Forest

Dave's Spot came in tonight, Wednesday August 18th, at 8:26 pm. He's hiked 27 miles today, arriving at PCT mile 1980. Check out Dave's Spot on Google maps:

http://www.findmespot.com/mylocation/?id=3I8Yj/44.17867/\-121.81641

The terrain tab helped me identify approximately where he is camping.

Look at the PCT Half Mile maps Oregon, Section E, page 11.

I got the last planned food packages sent to Dave throughout the remainder of Oregon and Washington. I'll only send additional packages if Dave requests something specific.

He only has 10 miles to hike tomorrow before he gets his next resupply package. He's getting a lighter pack, so I know he's excited!

This morning I received a phone call from Zero and Fire Marshall. They camped last night at PCT mile 1913. I had recorded them at 1897, so I was glad to hear that they are closer to Dave than I thought. They asked me to send them food at a point where food is not available. I am holding onto some of their items, so I raided the food, bought a few additional things at the store, and got their box sent off.

Tonight, their Spot came in just prior to 8:00, and shows them camping at the northern tip of Irish Lake, at PCT mile 1937.6. See PCT Half Mile map Oregon, Section e, page 4. You can use the link above.

He is heading toward Sisters, which is at PCT mile 1990. He should hit that mile tomorrow evening, hopefully while the post office is still open! He'll have his lighter pack, and some odds and ends he had asked for.

Dave's trail name "Just Dave" has been changed due to the miles he's doing daily. His new name is "Super Dave". He is passing people who had passed him previously while she was doing 20 miles or so per day. I know he'll be enjoying his lighter pack.

Crescent Lake

Dave called Sunday, August 15th around 4:00. He was worried that I'd see his Spot tonight off trail and wanted to let us know what had happened. He is in the Deschutes National Forest, west of Crescent Lake.

He hiked 14 miles today to the water location. He had heard the day before from a south bound PCT hiker that there was quite a lot of water at this location. A trail angel keeps it well stocked and there is also a seasonal stream near by.

When Dave arrived there, the water from the trail angel was gone. Previous hikers had used it all. This, alone, is not an issue, because the water from a trail angel is first come first serve. However, there was a note asking to be called if the water was low or gone. Dave called the trail angel who had not heard from anyone that the water was gone. That made Dave angry. Trail courtesy was not followed.

Dave and his hiking buddies, Redhead and Double D, found a reroute to water. This reroute cut off approximately 7 miles and got them to water. Dave had plenty of water to hike to that water. See Dave's Spot:

Once Dave is back on the trail later on Monday, August 16th, I'll be able to post his mileage.

Miller Lake Trail Junction

Dave called in around 4:00 this afternoon. He was rather down today. His pack is weighing him down. He can't seem to find a pack that is comfortable for him. He had another 5 miles to walk before he would take the pack off for the night.

His Spot came in tonight at 7:21. Dave is camping at PCT mile 1871 at Miller Lake Trail Junction. See PCT Half Mile map Oregon section D, page 4.

Dave had pretty poor reception today when trying to call me today. Our connection was cut off twice... and then nothing for a while. He decided to hike to the highest point of the Oregon-Washington portion of the Pct. ORWAHigh Point is at PCT mile 1866 at 8560 feet. Finally we had good reception.

We were able to discuss the next shipments of resupplies. Since Dave is moving much faster, I've had to rearrange the shipping schedule. When trying to ship maps to Crescent lake I had an issue. UPS couldn't locate the address in their system. I tried the post office, but they too were unable to ship the maps. I called the Crescent Lake Resort and they told me that their post office had burnt down and they now had a new zip code. I drove to the UPS store to ship the maps, they were closed. Dave is planning on being there to pick up the maps Monday morning. I called the location again and got their fax number. Instead of shipping, Dave will receive his maps faxed Monday morning.

Zero and Fire Marshall have made it to the North side of Crater Lake. They are at PCT mile 1843. They are about a day behind Dave. Check out their spot on Google Maps:

I forgot to mention yesterday Dave's mishap with his sleeping pad. He set his tent up and was in bed about 8:30. At 10:30 he was woken when his pad deflated. He found he had put his tent up on a broken bottle. It punctured both his sleeping pad and his tent. Luckily he carries patches with him and was able to repair both the tent and the pad.

In and out of Crater Lake

It's 9:05 and I just received Dave's. I had a chance to talk to him around 3:00 this afternoon.

He spent last night near the store in Mazama because all the camping spots were taken. There was a pack of hikers in town. Epic, Wolf Taffy, Golden Child, Schroomer were just a few. He got the package I had sent to him. The package was suppose to arrive Thursday, but got in Friday morning. The backpack he had requested was way too heavy, so I'll be sending another one to him at the next resupply location, Sisters. The 4 gig card I sent him was the wrong one - it was an SC card not an SD card. I'm off tomorrow to buy him another one and get it out in the mail tomorrow - so no pictures until next mail delivery.

When Dave called home, he had left Mazama, the small town just prior to Crater Lake, PCT mile 1729.5. He was taking a rest with Redhead and another hiker whose name I don't know at the rim of Crater Lake, around PCT mile 1734. He was uber hydrating because there is no water source for the next 26 miles. I had a chance to talk to Redhead. We had both heard about each other, and he decided it was time we met at least over the phone. Hopefully, he'll one day come and visit us here in Duarte. He's a climber and wants to get Dave to do some climbing with him.

One plan would be to stay there, have water for dinner and breakfast, and then load up for the day and hike his 26 miles. However, we know Dave has that itch and all he wants to do now is hike. So, he was loading up with three liters of water. He figured that they would hike as long as they could, stop for the night, and by mid day get to the next water source. He was confidant they could do it.

His Spot shows him camping at the Northern end of Crater Lake. That was about 8 miles from where he was when he called me. It could be that they found water and decided to camp near the water source. He may have run into other hikers who talked him into staying there.

Curtis and Gary Fratianne thanks for the ride to Etna. Father and son from Avon Lake, Ohio.

Sheri Meguiar thanks for the ride to Etna Trail head and good luck with your horses.

Carl Sieg and Rodney thanks for the hospitality, drinks, and use of your cabin.

Motorcycle girl - good luck with your ride.

It is wonderful to hear about all of the trail magic! You are all really special people!

Zero and Fire Marshall's spot came in at 8:30. They are at Mazama, PCT mile 1729.5, only about 12 miles behind Dave.

Mazama Village, Crater Lake, OR

Dave's Spot came in tonight at 8:30. He made it into Mazama Village where his next box of resupplies are waiting for him. He's getting Zero's extra backpack, replacing the one he has that has a broken chest strap. He'll be sending back his broken pack along with his SD card of pictures.

Dave had thought a few days ago that he'd make it into Crater Lake tomorrow. I'm sure he's excited to get in a day early.

Zero and Fire Marshall tonight are camping approximately where Dave was camping last night, PCT mile 1807 or 1808. They are hoping to see Dave at Crater Lake. If Dave hangs around tomorrow he'll see them tomorrow evening. We'll have to wait until Dave checks in to see what his plans are - or watch for tomorrow night's Spot.

PCT mile 1807 - middle of no where!

Wednesday, August 11th, Dave's Spot came in at 7:42. He is camping at PCT mile 1807. See the PCT Half Mile map Oregon Section C, page 5.

http://www.pctmap.net/download/p/mapdl.html

Here is Dave's Spot if you want to check it out on Google Maps:

Dave had predicted he would hike 30 miles by 7:00. He started this morning at PCT mile 1772.5. He hiked 35 miles today!

Zero and Fire Marshall called today to see if I knew where Dave was. They were thinking that they had fallen miles and miles behind Dave. They were pleased to know that they had camped only one mile behind Dave last night. I told them Dave's plan to get 30 miles in today.

When the guys called me they were at Fish Lake, PCT mile 1780.5. They were waiting for the UPS delivery which was due to get in by 3:00 because they needed their package that contained shoes. Zero had worn a hole in his shoes. Their plan was that if they got their package at 3:00 they would get right back on the trail and hike 13 more miles, heading to PCT mile 1793. They want to make it into Crater Lake on Friday to meet up with Dave. If the package doesn't get in until 7:00 (last drop), then they will stay the night there and get up O-dark-30 and put the miles in tomorrow. Team Far Sight's Spot came in at 7:15 tonight. They are unfortunately at Fish Lake. Hopefully they have their package and can get started tomorrow early. If the package didn't show up, they'll ave to spend another day waiting. I told them that I'd keep watching their progress and report it to Dave until they caught up.

Lake of the Woods Trail

Dave made it to the Brown Mt. Shelter (PCT mile 1771) in time for dinner tonight, Tuesday August 10th. He waited for Zero and Fire Marshall, but felt the urge to continue on. There were just too many hikers at this spot.

He hiked another mile, just prior to the Lake of the Woods Trail (PCT mile 1772.5). It was getting dark and there were no flat spots, so he headed east up the mountain using an animal trail. His goal was to get to the ridge to find a place for his tent. He got his tent up, but it is slanted, so sleeping will be fun.

See PCT half mile map Oregon Section B, page 7 - check out the topo lines just east of PCT mile 1772.5 - what an uphill Dave had!

Also check out his spot:

A bonus about getting on this ridge meant that he had a cell phone signal. He made a quick call to me in order to save his battery. He was worried about Zero and Fire Marshall and wondered if their spot had come in. Luckily it had just a few moments prior. They were at the Brown Mt. Shelter, only 1 1/2 miles away from Dave.

Dave made 22 miles today, which is great, even though he got a late start. Tomorrow he is aiming for 30 miles. He said that only the dark kept him from putting in more miles today. He felt he had more miles in him.

Dave made friends at Hyatt Resort

Dave called this morning, August 10th. He did not set off his Spot last night, but did send it in this morning. It showed up at PCT mile 1750.

He got to the Hyatt Lake Resort last night one hour before they closed and got his resupply package. There he met an ex-sheriff of Ashland, Carl, and another new friend, Rodney. They had dinner together. When Dave asked where a good camp ground was, Carl offered his floor. He lived about two miles from the resort.

The guys were up until around 2:00 am talking and playing "igloos and polar bears". Needless to say, Dave got a later start this morning than he had originally planned. That didn't seem to matter because he's loving the adventures he's having.

Today he's planning on walking until around 7:00 pm and then setting up camp. He hopes to do at least 25 miles today.

Dave met up this morning with another hiker who had seen Zero and Fire Marshall. By the time Dave left this morning, the other two hikers were only 4 miles behind him. The day is overcast and the weather should stay cool. Perfect hiking weather.

One tidbit Dave gave me was that he found that hitchhiking in Oregon is illegal, but the big crack downs are in the state parks. That is a good fact for him to learn early on.

More tonight when ave's Spot shows up.

Hyatt Lake Resort

Dave's plan today was to get to Hyatt Lake Resort at PCT mile 1750. Dave hoped to get to PCT mile 1752.

Zero's Spot came in at 8:30 tonight, at PCT mile 1743.5, at the Keene Reservoir. My guess is that the guys left Ashland late today or had troubles getting a hitch to the trail, therefore not being able to make the 25 miles.

See PCT Half Mile maps Oregon Section B, page 3 for where Zero and Fire Marshall are camping, and pege 4 for where Dave was scheduled to camp.

We'll know more tomorrow when we get Dave's Spot location.

Leaving Ashland

Dave had wanted to get up early to get on the trial today, however, he had to get a hitch back to the trail. Knowing no one would be around before 6 or 7, he changed his plans accordingly.

Not being able to find a hitch, he located a bus that go him much closer to the trail. From there he did get a hitch to the trail.

Dave started out before Zero and Fire Marshall this morning because he had to make the side trip to get his resupply package. He still plans on hiking 25 miles today. I've not yet gotten a Spot from him, but will keep watching for it and update today's blog with that information. If no Spot comes in, I'll locate Zero's Spot and will estimate Dave's location. We have no idea why Dave's Spot works sometimes and other times it doesn't.

Ashland, OR

Dave hiked to PCT mile 1727 today, which is at the 5 freeway just outside of Ashland. Lately, he's had easy times getting a hitch into town. Today he had to wait over 45 minutes. Maybe his beard, which is getting scruffy, is making drivers pass him by. I've asked him to send new pictures of himself.

He got into town and was dropped off at the local hostile where he met Fire Marshall. Dave had not seen Zero or Redhead they night before, hitching into town alone. Those two stopped four miles short of where Dave was camping.

Needing lunch, Dave and Fire Marshall asked the locals where to go to lunch. They were told repeatedly a specific location. When they got there, Zero and Redhead were already there having lunch! The team was back together again.

They have spent the rest of the day resting, doing laundry, and resupplying food and batteries. Fire Marshall was making dinner for everyone tonight.

Tomorrow they will get back on the trail, hoping to do another 20 to 25 miles. Dave will have a side trip because he had me send his maps and fuel to the Hyatt Resort. It is 8/10ths of a mile off the PCT. Dave will be up at 4:00 tomorrow to get a head start.

Mt. Ashland Campground

Dave's spot came in at 7:57 pm. He did make it to the Mt. Ashland Campground at PCT mile 1718. Hopefully they will find Fire Marshall with feet ready to hike. See PCT Half Mile map, California Section R, page 8.

Also take a look at Dave's Spot at Google Map:

http://www.findmespot.com/mylocation/?id=3Ccai/42.07515/\-122.71521

His goal is to hike 25 miles each day, getting him to Washington by August 26th. If he makes that date, he'll aim for the Washington border for September 13th. Leaving 4 additional days to get to Manning Park, Canada (September 17th). Dave and the guys will then head back to Echo Lake (Lake Tahoe area) and hike the 400 miles that they jumped, ending his hike on October 3rd.

I'll update this schedule as miles are or are not met.

I've added to Dave's Blog, just above the big picture of the stack of rocks (the duck), his daily mileage. If you don't have time to read the blog, you can just check out his mileage.

Dave has begun eating peanut butter and jelly on tortillas for lunch. Not wanting to carry around heavy glass or plastic, he improvised and took an inexpensive pastry bag, put the jelly in it, and sealed it up with duct tape. Sadly, it burst. That can be a bit sticky and messy. Thanks to Jim Curts, a co-worker and fellow hiking lover, Dave is getting his very own tubes made especially for hikers. Thanks Jim! I'm sending extra so Dave can hand them out to other hikers. Seems they are all having issues with sticky messes!

The long awaited phone call near Ashland, OR

It's 5:00 on Saturday August 7th, and I just hung up the phone with Dave. He has hiked 20 miles today, took a quick break when he found he had a few bars to call home, and is now back on the trail to make as many more miles as he can today. It is wonderful to hear him sound so happy! He has been surprised by how strong he feels with all these miles - he loves his hiking legs!

Since Fire Marshall's feet were so bad in Etna, he got a ride into Ashland and has been camping and resting his feet. Dave, Zero, and Redhead (earlier mistakenly called Redmond), have been making over 20 miles each day. Redhead and Zero have a very similar pace and have been walking together. Dave is up and on the trail each morning by 6:00, putting in as many miles as he can. Although he's camped alone some nights, he has been able to spend some time each day with Zero and Redhead.

Dave has run into hikers that we met early on in this adventure. Schroomer we met in Warner Springs and had him, with others, stay in our campsite. Dave was happy to see him again. He is called Schroomer because he claims he could eat his way to Canada living off the land. He especially has a nose for edible mushrooms.

Dave and the guys spent some time celebrating at the Oregon border today.

I had mailed some packages ahead with maps and fuel that Dave had pre-addressed. It's been so long he forgot where to get these packages. We've gone over a list of where he is to get his packages along with other items he needs. His backpack's strap has broken and is now tied. I'm sending him one of Zero's backpacks, as I have several here.

Dave also swears by his GPS. It has really helped him out. That is one piece of weight that he would not give up. The only issue is that he needs my computer to upload his information onto the GPS. He has about 300 miles left on the GPS. We are going to try and find a way for him to remote into my computer.

His Spot tonight should be at the Ashland campground. I'll update his blog with specifics when it comes through tonight.

Rogue River National Forest

Dave's Spot came in at 6:56 pm tonight. The guys are hiking in the Rogue River National Forest. The Rogue River is a wonderful place to fly fish! Too bad Dave is hiking and not fishing!

The Spot shows Dave east of Condrey Mountain, at PCT mile 1690. See PCT Half Mile map California Section R page 5.

Dave has only 9 miles to go until hi hits the Oregon border! Granted, he has 400 California miles to make up after he makes his way to Canada, but wow, Dave will be in Oregon tomorrow! Dave will have an uphill walk into Oregon.

Seiad Valley - oh so close to the Oregon Border

Once again I got no Spot email from Dave, but Team Far Sight's Spot did come in. On Thursday, August 5 the guys hiked into and out of Seiad Valley, PCT mile 1662. You can drive to Seiad Valley - just take the 5 freeway towards Oregon and turn west on highway 96.

Our hikers most likely had lunch or did some resupplying in Seiad Valley, but then kept going and stopped to camp at PCT mile 1666. Three more days and they should be in Ashland Oregon. Check out PCT Half Mile map, California Section R, page 1. Yes, that's right. Dave, Zero, and Fire Marshall have moved onto the last PCT Half Mile map for California!

http://www.pctmap.net/download/p/mapdl.html

They have a steep hike out of Seiad Valley. Town is at 1400 feet. They've hiked to 3400 feet today. Tomorrow they'll peak at almost 6000 feet. The next day or two will be almost flat compared to what they are going through now, staying around the 6000 foot mark.

Grider Creek Road, near Seiad Valley

The Spot came in today at 12:30. Not sure why the guys stopped hiking mid day. It looks like they've stopped at PCT mile 1655.

The only thing I can think of is that they decided to hitch into Seiad Valley. The PCT is a 6.5 mile road walk from Grider Creek Campground to Seiad Valley. I would have figured that they'd hike to PCT mile 1662 which would take them into Seiad Valley. If they didn't hitch, they may have just needed some rest. Seiad Valley is a small town, so Dave may not have phone reception.

King's Castle

It is Tuesday, August 3rd. Dave's Spot once again did not send out an email. The Spot for Team Far Sight did show up at 7:55 pm. Looks like they are camping on the PCT close to King's Castle.

See PCT Half Mile Map California section Q, page 5 at PCT mile 1636.5. If they were really only at PCT mile 1609 or 1610 last night, they really made great distance today!

http://www.pctmap.net/download/p/mapdl.html

This section Q of the PCT California section will take the guys to PCT mile 1662. They should be at that mile marker by Thursday. Tomorrow and Thursday will be mostly down hill. Talking to Dave and Zero, they will tell you they enjoy the uphill much more than the down hill. These old guys are talking about their sore knees when going down hill. Hopefully they won't be in too much pain.

Moving on from Etna

Monday, August 2nd found Dave back on the trail after spending two days in Etna, California. They must have gotten a late start because they only went approximately 4 miles today. His Spot came in at 7:44 pm. I had been holding my breath all day. I'd either get a phone call if he was still in town or I'd get the Spot. I was relieved to see the Spot message.

It is a bit difficult to tell exactly where the guys are camping, but it looks like PCT mile 1609 - 1610. The are due West from Etna. See PCT Half Mile maps California Section Q, page 1. This section is 55 miles. Start - Etna Summit, mile 1606.5; End - Seiad Valley, mile 1662; Elevation Gain +11,860'; Elevation Loss -16,441', Elevation Change -4,581'.

Dave had mentioned that the past week hiking had been much easier than the Sierras. Because of that, he felt he was actually gaining weight back! I don't think that he had dropped too much weight, but I'm glad that he's feeling better about his weight and energy.

I mailed off his first packages to Oregon today. He'll be stopping in Ashland to pick up these supplies. Dave took me there a few years ago to the Shakespeare Festival. We stayed at the Mt. Ashland Bed and Breakfast. That is where I discovered Dave's deep desire to through hike the PCT. The PCT goes across the driveway of the Mt. Ashland Bed & Breakfast and we met our first PCT through hiker as we did a bit of our own PCT section hiking.

Getting to Oregon is a huge milestone. The more miles Dave travels, the more excited he gets about this hike. That makes this all worth while!!

More pictures from Dave's trip

Rest day in Etna

Dave managed to get a phone signal today to let me know that he's still in Etna. They had hoped to get back on the trail today, but Fire Marshall's feet needed a full day of healing.

He describes the town of Etna as a "Northern Exposure" town, but instead of moose walking down the street, there are deer and plenty of them.

Dave was on his way with 7 other PCT through hikers to the other side of town (3 blocks away) to the main grocery store. They were going to make burgers for dinner and samores for desert (Zero's request).

He was not sure if he'd be camping tonight at the High School again, or if they would stay at the hostel. He was just hoping to get on the trail tomorrow so he can keep moving forward.

Fuel is becoming a concern. Dave is hoping that what fuel he has will last to Ashland, Oregon, where I'll be sending his resupply fuel. Fuel has to travel by ground, so I'm hoping it will get to him in time. I know that the other hikers will share if necessary. Dave has met amazing people on this trail. He just likes to be self sufficient.

Trail Angel Jane

Etna, California

Dave called Saturday July 31st. The guys made it into Etna, California, their resupply location. When Dave got off the trail, he found a hitch 10.4 miles into town almost right away. Zero and Fire Marshall joined him later.

The Etna exit from the trail is at PCT mile 1606.5. Dave says it is a town 1 mile x 1 mile. He went to the shell station, was able to shower, and wash his clothes. He camped with Zero and a new friend, Redmond, in the woods by the High School.

Fire Marshall has issues with his feet, so he went to the Hostel. Dave was unsure whether or not Fire Marshall would be able to hike today. They were all hoping to get right back on the trail last night, but decided to give Fire Marshall's feet a rest.

Dave sounds so very excited. He's pleased with the progress they've been making. Their goal now is to hike 120 to 140 miles per week. Dave said the trail is so much easier. It's clear, well maintained, and the climbing has been minimal. He did say that they are going to be climbing soon, but it's nothing like the Sierras. Every time they turn a corner there is a more beautiful scene to see. He's been disappointed at how much wildlife he has not seen. This area around Etna and Mt. Shasta is full of deer. They are everywhere and Dave is loving it.

Thursday night Dave camped just off a road and was worried all night about cows trampling him. He said that there were so many cows and they were everywhere. Sadly, the cows don't sleep at night, they just kept moving around him. He was thankful there were no cow incidents!

There has been some concern with crossing the boarder into Canada. Dave has all permits from the States and from Canada to do a legal crossing. I'm going to do a bit more investigation to insure he'll have no issues crossing into Canada. There are just over 1000 miles to go until he he gets to Canada.

He had very poor phone service yesterday, but he was going to try and call again today to let me know the status of Fire Marshall's feet and whether or not they'd be able to get on the trail today.

A great big congratulations to Dave's MOM and DAD on their Wedding Anniversary yesterday!!! Hope you had a fabulous celebration of this special day and the past 57 years! Dave is thinking of you both and all his family all the time. He loves you very much.
