Dave called Sunday, August 15th around 4:00. He was worried that I'd see his Spot tonight off trail and wanted to let us know what had happened. He is in the Deschutes National Forest, west of Crescent Lake.
He hiked 14 miles today to the water location. He had heard the day before from a south bound PCT hiker that there was quite a lot of water at this location. A trail angel keeps it well stocked and there is also a seasonal stream near by.
When Dave arrived there, the water from the trail angel was gone. Previous hikers had used it all. This, alone, is not an issue, because the water from a trail angel is first come first serve. However, there was a note asking to be called if the water was low or gone. Dave called the trail angel who had not heard from anyone that the water was gone. That made Dave angry. Trail courtesy was not followed.
Dave and his hiking buddies, Redhead and Double D, found a reroute to water. This reroute cut off approximately 7 miles and got them to water. Dave had plenty of water to hike to that water. See Dave's Spot:

Once Dave is back on the trail later on Monday, August 16th, I'll be able to post his mileage.

Now he's getting into my old neck of the woods. Can't wait to see the pictures!
ReplyDeleteSaw Dave today 8/21 on a viewpoint overlooking Wasco Lake. Believe he was having a late lunch, ~2:30 PM. Had a nice little chat about several things, including re the forest fire that burnt much of the timber around the lake, and the weather... seeming to cloud up, maybe some drizzle tomorrow. Was pleasant chatting and hearing of his adventure. Wishing him well and Godspeed in getting to Canada when he hopes. Will be praying for a speedy & safe completion of his journey.
